OCEAN’S 8

Warner Bros Pictures

Warner Bros/Village Roadshow’s all-female reboot of the George Clooney & crew reboot of the original Rat Pack pic began international rollout in 16 markets with a strong $12.2M on 4,267 screens. Mostly targeting Latin America a week before the World Cup kicks off — and before Jurassic World 2 stomps into the markets — this counterprogrammer caper was No. 1 across the region.

Australia, however, led individual play with $4.7M on 487 screens, ranking a clear No. 1 with 49% of the Top 5 films in the market. As with domestic, the opening result is the best for the Ocean’s franchise. It’s also more than double of Now You See Me 2.

Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and the rest of the gang further dominated Mexico with $2.6M on 1,630 screens and 47% of the Top 5. The numbers again top the boy Ocean’s movies as well as Focus (+37%) and Now You See Me (+33%).

Brazil likewise bested the previous installments with $1.7M on 653 screens and is 88% ahead of NYSM and 29% bigger than Focus.

The next openings will come in France and Korea this week with Germany, Russia and the UK bowing throughout June. Spain and Italy are in July and the ladies swipe Japan screens on August 10.

Around Oceans 13 WW?

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic:  $117,154,724    37.6%
Foreign:  $194,157,900    62.4%

Worldwide:  $311,312,624

Crossing $200m overseas along with what it makes domestic would be nice, and would take it over O13 (unadjusted).

OCEAN’S 8

Ocean's 8
Warner Bros Pictures

Warner Bros/Village Roadshow’s Ocean’s 8 opened in a handful of new markets this session as it continues offshore rollout and looks to counterprogram against the World Cup. The weekend was worth $19.3M on 6,356 screens in 36 markets. The international cume is now $37.1M.

Korea got off to a good start with $5.3M on 837 screens and taking the No. 3 slot behind local pic The Accidental Detective 2 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The debut is 83% ahead of Ocean’s 13. In France, the all-femme caper scored No. 2 with $2M from 554 screens. And in Taiwan ($1.1M/No. 2) and Hong Kong ($789K/No. 2) the movie had the best launch for the franchise.

Australia, Mexico and Brazil are all No. 2 this weekend with running cumes of $8.3M, $4.8M and $3.3M to date. Rollout continues next week in Germany, Russia and the UK with Spain, Italy and Japan to follow.

Is 230M+ OS possible?

Hard to say at this point. It would need some very strong legs to get there because there are only 5 markets left to open: Finland, Sweden, Spain, Italy, and Japan. As long as it reaches $200m or just surpasses (unadjusted) O13 I would be happy. Under O13's OS haul would definitely feel disappointing. Let's hope for legs.

It should end as the lowest grossing of the franchise OS. I still think there is room for a sequel, tho.

Women watch soccer a lot so if WB thought this was a good counter-programming they should think again next time. The movie cost only 70M so it'll justify a sequel. Though considering meh script and direction, I don't think there's going to be much passion for more. The cast is great but it's let down by the rest and doubtful anything improves on that front. They'll add another big name or two, but keep shit director and writer.

You loose some of them, but at the same time you gain girl night out when the boyfriend are watching smaller game (that do not involve the local team), it is probably has good as it get counter-programming wise for the mainstream adult audience.

Japan was by a good amount the best market for that franchise and has yet to open, Italy/Spain usually are really strong good also and the current one should reach 140m to 172m.,

How is it going to reach 140 to 172M from current markets before it opens in Japan, Spain and Italy? Unless BOM didn't update, it's at only 70M from current markets. Where will another 70 or even 100M come from but from new markets to open.

Not before I am talking about the total runs in those already open market.

It is at 70.6m from a 26.9m weekend, lot of intl market are more leggy than domestic and often the second weekend drop can be the harshest if it play a bit like on the domestic.

It just opened in Germany/Russia/Portugal and so on.... were even fanboys franchise sequel movie tend to go over 3.0, (Thor 3 did over 6.0x legs in Russia for example)

Using Ocean 13 for an example of this:

Germany WB 6/7/07 $3,443,915 20.3% $16,958,691 9/23/07

.

Russia - CIS Karo 6/7/07 $2,149,017 31.9% $6,745,631 9/16/07

.,

Spain WB 6/8/07 $3,029,549 27.6% $10,979,002 9/23/07

.

Norway Sandrew 6/8/07 $312,546 12.9% $2,427,178 9/2/07

.

United Kingdom WB 6/8/07 $5,950,959 22.5% $26,483,353 9/2/07

.

Australia Roadshow 6/14/07 $3,365,866 32.3% $10,415,093 9/12/07

If it does 2.5x times it's last weekend, that 138m

If it does 3.5x times it's last weekend, that 165m
