I know that the studio also use money for marketing, but here’s the thing, when referring to the success of a movie, most people don’t talk about the marketing. If a movie makes back twice its considered breaking even.

Okay?

Studios on average get half of a movie's receipts, the theater gets the other half. You need 2x to cover the budget but that doesn't include marketing which Disney probably spent 100m+ on. I'm sure it eventually became profitable after theaters, but that's not the main issue: the return of Tron was something Disney had been pumping up for years and it was met with a loud 'meh'. It's been three years and they haven't greenlit a sequel, that should show you how much Disney cares about it.

Maybe they really are clueless about how to continue the franchise, not surprising given how much they are working on thesedays

Glad to hear this project isn't dead.

How far along is TRON 3?

Horowitz: Hopefully we’ll have some news about what’s going on forward with the next one soon. There’s nothing official to announce now but hopefully soon, but it’s chugging along. It is. Eddie [Kitsis] and I are co-producers on the film. And we have a script that’s being written by a great writer named Jesse Wigutow. And we’re really, really excited. I mean the studio is hopefully excited, but Joe is involved and everybody’s involved and everybody is waiting to get the go-ahead and we’re hopeful.

The sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy will be filmed in Vancouver beginning this fall.

According to Vancity Buzz entertainment contributor Lindsay Barker, Walt Disney Pictures has green lighted the third film in the Tron series. Filming is scheduled to begin on October 5, 2015.

The project has been in development since the success of the 2010 film, which raked in $400 million with a $170 million budget.

At this time, only Garrett Hedlund has been confirmed to return to the cast. In the previous film, Hedlund starred as Sam Flynn, the son of the 1982 film’s original character Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges) who became stuck in the Grid’s digital world for two decades. The character Quorra, a skilled Grid warrior and confidante to Kevin, was portrayed by Olivia Wilde.

A majority of Tron: Legacy was shot at Canadian Motion Picture Park in Burnaby while some ‘real world’ scenes were filmed at the Shangri-La Vancouver Hotel (ENCOM headquarters), the Lions Gate Bridge (final escape scene) and neighbourhoods in East Vancouver.

Tron 3 is not the only big budget science-fiction Hollywood blockbuster being filmed in Vancouver this year. Production for Star Trek 3 is scheduled to begin on June 1, which will involve the reconstruction of the Enterprise set within a local movie studio.
