John Cena is in final negotiations to star in the Paramount Players movie “Playing With Fire,” sources tell Variety.

The family comedy revolves around a group of rugged wildfire fighters who meet their match when they rescue a trio of rambunctious children.

Todd Garner and Sean Robins of Broken Road Productions are on board to produce “Playing With Fire.” Paramount Players bought the spec script from Dan Ewen this past February and hired Matt Lieberman to pen a rewrite. Paramount executive VP Matt Dines is overseeing for the studio.

After Sonic the Hedgehog moved from Nov. 8 to Feb. 14, 2020 this morning, Paramount has filled that hole with Andy Fickman’s Playing With Fire starring Judy Greer, John Cena, John Leguziamo, and Brianna Hildebrand. The feature we hear is ready and a good family film for the date. Last November, Paramount counterprorgammed heading into Thanksgiving with the Mark Wahlberg-Rose Byrne family movie Instant Family which debuted to $14.5M and did a 4.6x multiple ending its U.S./Canada run at $67.3M.

Playing With Fire brings Paramount’s November release count back to three after Terminator: Dark Fate on Nov. 1 and Rhythm Section on Nov. 22. Playing with Fire will open against Warner Bros’ Doctor Sleep, Lionsgate’s Midway, and Universal’s Last Christmas.

Between this, the Dora movie, and the Sonic movie, Paramount seems bafflingly committed to bringing back late-90s/early-2000s types of family movies.

Throw in the Daddy’s Home while we’re at it.

Surprised Nickelodeon Movies is still up and running considering Paramount has both Paramount Animation and Paramount Players which takes away the need.

Nickelodeon's a more popular and recognizable brand to people, and it gives Viacom more of an excuse to promote the film on the TV channel. That simple
