The Boy and the Heron | Hayao Miyazaki | Studio Ghibli | GKIDS | NA Debut at TIFF | WINNER OF THE OSCAR FOR BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

I wonder how much the reception on the US depends on how it does in Japan.

Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke got hype before their US debuts from how much BO they did in Japan... looks like The Boy and the Heron might not have that advantage.

We'll just have to wait for reviews from Toronto.

The pamphlet finally came out and some stills from the movie are floating around... as well as clips in a certain popular video app. Idk why that video hasn't been taken down yet after 4 weeks. I'm pretty sure Japan is very strict with that.

And yeah, now I get why there's zero marketing when the production costs are already that high omg.

On the contrary. If it cost so much they should have promoted it.

wow that's a lot. That book must be really popular in Japan.

I think something like The Catcher in the Rye sells about 300,000 a year in the USA. In terms of old books that still sell a lot.

Those copies were mostly sold after Miyazaki announced the title of his film (oricon only started tracking fairly recently in 2008 and has no idea of the book's sales prior to it, and IIRC the number between 2008 and the announcement wasn't very high).

That the Catcher In The Rye is required reading for many College English courses has a lot to do with that.
