Winter Game SOTM 2 - This SOTM is purely Academic

Recommended Posts

Okay, the Oscar question returns and it is time to try and make it balanced...

Predict the 6 highest grossing films that get nominated for an Oscar (Any Oscar will make a film eligible for the list but the film must be released in Winter Game regulation time (so no Black Panther, Quiet Place etc here).

However, here are a few ways that a films gross can be multiplied: (A film can be multiplied many times over, but only once in each coloured section so the best option only applies)

If a film is nominated for an Oscar, it is eligible for this list.

If a film is nominated for 2 or more Oscars, its gross is Doubled.

If a film is nominated for 4 or more Oscars, its gross is Tripled.

If a film is nominated for 6 or more Oscars, its gross is Quadrupled.

If a film is nominated for 8 or more Oscars, its gross is Quintupled.

If a film is nominated for 10 or more Oscars, its gross is Sextupled.

If a film is nominated for at least one Acting/Directing/Best Picture Oscar, its gross is doubled.

If a film is nominated for at least 2 Acting/Directing/Best Picture Oscar, its gross is tripled.

If a film is nominated for at least 3 Acting/Directing/Best Picture Oscar, its gross is Quadtupled.

If a film is nominated for at least 4 Acting/Directing/Best Picture Oscar, its gross is Quintupled.

If a film is nominated for at least 5 Acting/Directing/Best Picture Oscar, its gross is Sextupled.

If a film WINS an Oscar, its gross is doubled.

If a film WINS 2 Oscars, its gross is tripled.

If a film WINS 4 Oscars, its gross is quadrupled.

If a film WINS 6 Oscars, its gross is quintupled.

If a film WINS 8 Oscars, its gross is sextupled.

If a film WINS 10 Oscars, its gross is septupled.

If a film WINS at least one Acting/Directing/Best Picture Oscar, its gross is doubled.

If a film WINS at least 2 Acting/Directing/Best Picture Oscar, its gross is tripled.

If a film WINS at least 3 Acting/Directing/Best Picture Oscar, its gross is quadrupled.

If a film WINS at least 4 Acting/Directing/Best Picture Oscar, its gross is quintupled.

If a film WINS at least 5 Acting/Directing/Best Picture Oscar, its gross is sextupled.

So a film that grosses only $10M dollars, but wins 10 Oscars including 5 of the big ones will end up with a gross of:

10 x 6 x 6 x 7 x 6 =  about $15B dollars -Not bad. (And why there is no gross guessing section here.

Okay so the math is crazy but the actual scoring is pretty simple:

For each correctly predicted film, regardless of order you receive 20,000 points

For each film in the exact spot you receive 10,000 bonus points (so 30,000 total)

For each film predicted that makes over $1B after multipliers, receive 5,000 points

For each film predicted that makes over $2.5B after multipliers, receive 10,000 points

For each film predicted that makes over $5B after multipliers, receive 20,000 points

For each film predicted that makes over $7.5B after multipliers, receive 30,000 points

For each film predicted that makes over $10B after multipliers, receive 50,000 points

Call 3 of the top 6 correctly (any order) receive 30,000 bonus points

Call 4 of the top 6 correctly (any order) receive 60,000 bonus points

Call 5 of the top 6 correctly (any order) receive 100,000 bonus points

Call 6 of the top 6 correctly (any order) receive 150,000 bonus points

For every incorrect film that wins an Oscar lose 10,000 points

For every incorrect film that gets an Oscar nomination lose 20,000 points

For every film that does not get nominated for any Oscar lose 40,000 points

Deadline Start of Game

You can abstain for 5,000 points, but that could be a mistake.

Oh, ty, good point. I know one of these Oscar questions doesn’t follow the game calendar, now to figure out which one it was...

Very last question in the Winter Preseason questions, Section G, RF3E: Highest Grossing Best Picture Nominee (does not need to get released in the game release window)

damn this is getting hard to scrabble together even a list of 6 given streaming's increasing presence, Fox Searchlight being largely absent during the game's season, and October being a bigger month for initial platform releases...

1. Bombshell

2. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

3. Little Women

4. Frozen II

5. 1917

6. Queen & Slim A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
