I don't think you are giving enough credit to the accomplishment that the Joker box office was!

It made a billion dollars despite legitimate media driven controversy about it inciting violence, it was R Rated which means you've cut out a huge part of potential audience, it didn't have some A-Lister/ Heartthrob as the lead actor and was basically a mental health drama instead of a big cgi actionfest and didn't get a china release, hell the first two Holland Spidey movies couldn't make a billion without china and Joker did almost 75 mil above it

Grossing a billion these days doesnt mean much compared to 2008. He's definitely a draw, arguably the 2nd most iconic villain of all time. I Just dont think the Joker character alone caused TDK to become the first superhero movie to gross 1b.

Fun fact, Batman's highest grossing movie doesn't even contain the Joker. End of May we will prpbably be saying the 2 highest grossing Batman movies do not contain the Joker

You might still be wrong about the last part though, judging off rumors and leaks :P

I just think the WoM and the reactions will help this film more than people anticipate. It's film-noir part horror film, which I think the audience still doesn't quite recognize, because I feel like the trailers (other than the teaser trailer) has done a poor job at depicting what the tone actually is. And we all know why trailers are usually crafted to look action-packed - it's fair marketing.

So, Scott didn’t really look at the data before writing that article?

Tracking is not the same thing as data. Tracking doesn't follow pre-sales. In fact, Scott got this information on the very day tickets went on sale. How would he know what the data would be?

It's more that Scott's interpretation of the numbers is colored by his take of things. There's likely a reason none of the trades have actually put out any tracking articles.

Jokers accomplishment was truly amazing, especially given the budget. I will say the controversy around inciting violence helped the movie more than anything. It gets people talling and interested to see what the attention is about, much like American sniper's controversy gave the film that box office edge. They actually had very similar performances in the States

On what planet Joaquin Phoenix isn't an A lister? With 3 Oscar nominations under his belt before his win for The Joker, and starring in some big hits (Gladiator, Walk the Line, Signs, The Village), he's more of an A lister than Tom Holland who has no career outside of Spiderman, or basically 90% of franchise actors. Big reason why Joker was such a phenomenon was that people loved the idea of Phoenix as Joker. That's when real hype started, when he was cast.

A lister moniker is so devalued that there's no real sense of who is and who isn't. But Phoenix definitely checks A list boxes more than most "stars" one would bet to be on the list just because 5,6,7,etc sequels and crossovers keep them relevant.

Depends on what you mean as an A-Lister. I don't think that internationally he was well known at all. Speaking from anecdotal evidence, the GA in Mexico didn't really care at all for his casting until the movie came out and made 44 million here, more than any Batman movie.

He's not a household name/general audience isn't all that aware of him, great actor for sure but nobody is saying "lets go watch that new joaquin movie" like they do with say Leo or did with Hanks, Roberts, Denzel, etc

He is a GREAT example of what happens when a known actor with "artistic integrity" takes on a big role. As you said, he is not an every draw and most of his movies make zero money. But put him in the role of the iconic villain and he brings a lot more interest to the project than if, say, they cast George Clooney as Joker.
