The proof is in the pudding Tenet is still the highest grossing original film since 2020 and thats with massive covid hurdles and no vaccine available and Dunkirk made 1/2 a billion in 2017 despite being based on a british ww2 story, if he's not a draw then i'd love to see who is
JustLurking
What pudding lmao Oppenheimer's early IMAX presales being so strong is quite literally proof of Nolan's draw unless you think people are rushing to buy tickets because they are big cillian murphy fans or history goons come on now Edited June 8, 2023 by JustLurking

This is the type of movie that has good legs and no real huge adult targeted competition thr rest of the summer
WittyUsername
Nolan movies usually have pretty solid legs. It should help that this isn’t a fanboy IP movie.
keysersoze123
All Nolan movies have had good legs including Dunkirk. There is no reason this wont play well entire summer. Plus based on Blunt it plays like a thriller and so it will pull in audience post OW with good reviews/user ratings.

It’s all over Twitter and TikTok. I’m not saying it’s the bulk of purchases but it’s a factor. It’ll be curious to see the gender breakdown for this movie’s audience. I'd say it's a very, very, very small factor. The big factor is Nolan Event Film because since forever all of his stuff is treated as an event aside from Memento, Insomnia and Prestige. But, yeah, I'm sure some RDJ nuts and Blunt fans are going to buy tickets too.

I don’t doubt it, but some people seem to forget that Cillian has fronted one of the most watched and iconic TV shows in the UK and globally for a decade, and is hugely popular here. Check any trailer for Oppenheimer and a lot of the comments are about him. No he’s not anywhere near Leo, but not an insignificant casting.
GOGODanca
His fangirls are very online, same with Timothee Chalamet but the actual real world drawing power is yet to be determined

It’s unchartered territory. Also, any crossover with Barbie will be from this demographic.

I thought we were speaking to DOM numbers though? People watch it here but I don't think it's like Game of Thrones was or anything like that. I think it his being the lead has little to no impact on the DOM ticket sales. Sales in the UK? Sure. I think he's a draw there given what you said.

Dunkirk made 500m worldwide despite no real box office draw star and the event it is based on not being something people were that familiar with and Tenet made 363m worldwide right when the pandemic started and loads of theaters were closed and with no box office draws starring. Why make an easily disproven lie? Tenet was September of 2020. It marks more of a midway point between theaters slamming closed in March of 2020 and the doors finally being primarily opened in April of 2021 with Kong vs Godzilla. But yeah, your point still stands.

Tenet was the 1st big movie that year.
GOGODanca
The only reason this movie is even being made at a $100m price point is cause nolan is attached, 99% of directors would get laughed out of a room trying to pitch the same thing at this cost
Issac Newton
I still remember - TENET was No.1 Imported Film in Japan until Fast 9 release
reddevil19
Tenet OS was higher than Black Widow, Shang Chi, Eternals, Ant-Man 3, Black Adam, Venom 2, to name a few high profile superhero flicks. Hell, it wasn't that far from The Batman, Thor 4 or Wakanda Forever. And ya, this was in the middle of a bit of a backlash against him insisting on theatrical in the circumstances, with cinemas closed or severely capacity controlled, and as has been mentioned the US was basically a no-go. I know it's the cool thing to say Tenet was a flop, but to me it solidified his drawing power. If it did get delayed to 2021, I have no doubt it would have done 150-200 domestic and 400 OS. Nolan is a draw, simple as that. BUT I will qualify that by saying he needs to next make a BIG movie, a proper spectacle. I maintain that he should go for a sword and sandals epic.
Hatebox
Is RDJ barely in this? I thought he’d be all over the marketing but there’s hardly been a flicker.

The person he's playing only becomes a major player after the bomb gets built, and most of the trailers thus far have emphasized the race to build the bomb (more obvious stakes). He's fourth-billed, so while he's probably not in it a ton, he'll probably be a fairly major character.
