Some people have problems with 3D (vision, headaches etc.) or just dislike the format.

I will be seeing it both ways probably and will likely watch in 3D my first time but I don't fault anyone who either can't or doesn't want to watch in 3D.

I don't fault anyone either. It's just hard for me to understand regarding Avatar specifically. Also here in Brazil 3D is much more popular than in the US apparently, so it could be some of this affecting my point of view too...

I have sensitive eyes and 3D can strain them. Thankfully I don't have a worse condition compared to most, but I still don't like putting myself through that.

Plus, and I'll be frank here, the "you have to experience it in 3D" isn't the selling point you think it is. If anything, you're making the movie sound worse. That unless you watch a movie in a specific way on a specific format, the film is lesser and you lose what made it special...well, that's basically code for the movie sucking. Plus, pretty unfair for everybody who didn't have the time to see Avatar, were too young to see Avatar in its initial release, or don't have 3D TVs with them.

And before you ask, I have seen Avatar in both 2D and 3D. IMAX 3D no less, since that was the only good time for me to see the movie on its re-release. And frankly, the 3D was cool, but I didn't think I gained anything from seeing it this way. I loved it just fine in 2D because I could still enjoy the amazing visuals and compelling story just fine.

I agree about the selling point. It's just that IMO it really affects the movie, I saw it in both formats and for me it definitely reduced my overall enjoyment with the movie and the world of Pandora (although I still really liked it).

The thing is, as I said, I'm actually impressed with the level of 3D sales here given that, in the DOM market at least, there is a level of hostility to the format here.  IMO from observation, at least.

The US market just doesn't like the format right now.  Maybe it's backlash from crappy 3D movies.  Maybe it's backlash from a sense of 3D being "forced down our throat" during the height of the 3D craze last decade when prime viewing times/screens were given to the format and folks just didn't want it.  Maybe it's just long standing cultural baggage dating back all the way to the 50s.

Maybe it's none of the above.

But I think it's telling that 3D TVs utterly bombed here (which as an aside probably didn't help with the whole perception of 3D in the States).

So when I hear folks say "Disney should really emphasize the point that A2 is in 3D as that will really help sales!!!!" I would simply respond by saying "that would be certainly be a choice" on Disney's part.  Much like I have been saying with most of their marketing about A2, really.

Yeah, I think there are a cultural thing too involved. Here in Brazil 3D is a lot more acepted than in the US apparently.

We're probably getting further and further away from the tracking/box office forecasting aspect here, but... The thing is, different people appreciate art differently.  For some like you, 3D added a hell of a lot.  For others it can be hit or miss.  Others might find it distracting or just not like the format at all.

It's the whole thing about art being subjective (within reason — no need to go reductio ad absurdum).  Some folks just want the story/presentation and some base level of great special effects is "enough" for them.  Others want as much WOW as possible.

I won't even bring up the hamburger/steak argument but instead stick straight to steaks.

Some folks like a $30 steak.  Some folks want a $50 or $60 steak.  And some will treat themselves to a $100 or more one.

The thing is... some folks either can't really tell the difference between a $30 steak and a $100 steak, or they don't care enough about the difference to pay the extra.

To swing it back to tracking/box office, cost is a consideration.  Movies are getting more expensive every year.  Surcharges add up when taking families.  Maybe 3D PLF Avatar 2 really will be better/more enjoyable for most people.

Question is... Is it more enjoyable ENOUGH?  Is it enjoyable enough to overcome bias/ingrained habits?  Or do people just want that $30 steak instead of the $60 or $100 one?

Don't know.  But it's certainly one way to look at it.

(I intentionally sidestepped the hamburger/steak comparison that is usually trotted out in respect for the vfx quality of A2 and everyone involved. 👍)

Nice increase over 24 hours. I think it will be ahead of T-21 pace of JWD(51,054). Plus sales for friday/saturday are also promising. Definitely feel good about 150m+ OW. Let us see closer to release how high it can go. I wish they had allowed reviews earlier but that seems to be against norm except for TGM.

To be fair I think this particular location is going to over-index no matter how the film performs due to the proximity of WDW/Pandora at Animal Kingdom.

Yeah, it's gonna be a monster at Disney World's theater. I'm sure starting this week the parks + Disney Springs are gonna be decorated head to toe with banners for the movie.
