I do want to make one slight proviso out of the way, right off the bat.  Inexplicably, a couple of showtimes got shifted around tonight at a theater that put up its final set tonight, and in the process two showings that had sold 45 3D tickets got lost to the ether.  After about 30+ minutes of checking, I'm pretty sure it is legit and the theater in question just gone dun goofed up when it added more A2 showings tonight (the auditorium got shifted to a BP:WF showing at a similar time).  Maybe they'll notice their mistake and correct it tomorrow, or maybe not.

But even with those 45 other tickets that still just be a 500 tickets sold day.

I guess we now sit and see just how much those reviews (which look to be very good) help things in these last couple of days.

Will attitude change when WOM really gets around?  I ain't betting against Cameron, that's for sure.  But right now I do think Disney is leaving a fair amount of money on the table with how they've handled the distribution of the film in regards to PLF and 2D.

So in full disclosure, I hate 3D movies and have zero plans to watch Avatar in the format. And I am someone who loves PLF/Biggest Screen Possible/Literally Drives to NYC to go to Lincoln Square:

We haven’t had a legitimate 3D movie in ages.  I don’t know what the upgraded technology will look like.  I do know the old technology: gave me a headache.  Unless you were sitting dead center in the theater, it always looked off.  And I suspect, I’m probably not the only person that has glasses and found the experience unpleasant.

I guess I’m sayin, it’s not just a preference thing. Some of the movie going public just can’t handle it. And until the film comes out, and your friends see it, and they tell you that “no it’s way better than it used to. It’s fine!” People might hold off.

Spoiler

And then add in the HFR and things will get really interesting

/Insert disclaimer that I think the movie is still gonna make buckets of money cause there is zero competition until basically March.

To add on that, i´ve seen a lot of complains about the HFR on reactions even by people who enjoyed the 3D on it. It´s a very specific technique and i doubt it will ever have a broad appeal to work on movies.

Let´s see the audience reactions, i suspect if they feel the OW was hurted by pushing 3D and HFR too hard, this time next week these PLF shows are going to look very different.

I've been legit wondering how HFR is gonna be handled/received, even to the point of saying "if James Cameron can't make HFR work, no one [at the moment] can".

But I do think that the PLFs for the next couple of weeks are probably already locked in simply due to holiday buying patterns, Xmas Day and Boxing Day in particular.  But Wk 3 and beyond?  Or for A3?  Wouldn't surprise me one whit to see a re-think if there is something of a backlash/depressed turnout thanks to that.

Even seeing something of a course correction locally as the vaaaaaaaast amount of the 73 showtimes added tonight were 2D (62 2D shows added vs 11 3D shows added).  Maybe that was always in the cards, but at the same time I can't help note it.

Still, trying not to draw too many premature conclusions.

The HFR is supposed to help with eye-strain and judder. That's it's purpose.

Jim explains the HFR in Avatar 2 in this short video. Please watch if you can he directly addresses people getting headaches.

I agree - both my Cinemarks expanded from their initial set, but they are still overwhelmingly 3d loaded, even at the theater without PLF, so it's crappy 2d screen with 3d glasses which movie goers hate around here.

For the record, before their final set, here they are...they have increased from 5 to 11 overall 2d shows between the 2 theaters, which is still a very small number...

1st Cinemark - 7 screens - 22 shows (7 3d PLF, 10 crappy 3d, 5 2d)

2nd Cinemark - 6 screens - 19 shows (13 crappy 3d, 6 2d)

Looking at presales, I think this is it...maybe an extra 2d show or two, but the way the crappy 3ds are selling, if they expand that, they want to lose ticket sales OW...

Edit to Add: And there's no rush for either theater to go early or late.  They start showing staggers at 10:15am and end by the 10:15pm (except the 1 extra PLF show at 11:15, to fit it in)...they don't expect anyone to ruin their schedules to watch this...(no 1am show or 8am show)...for now...

Final sets: One went all in (the one with PLF) and one didn't

1st Cinemark - 9 screens (they did increase) - 28 shows (same 7 3d PLF, 13 crappy 3d - gonna regret those extra 3, 8 2d) - so final add was 3 3d shows and 3 2d shows

2nd Cinemark - 6 screens (no screen increase, but they added 1 last crappy 3d for the later night) - 20 shows (14 crappy 3d, 6 2d)

The 1st Cinemark's overall showing count rivals blockbuster Marvel (Strange, Spidey) - the 2nd rivals non-blockbuster Marvel or DC super

Movies held by each

Cinemark 1 (none on more than 1 screen - some on less)

Wakanda Forever

Strange World

The Menu

Violent Night

Devotion

Spirited Sing Along

Cinemark 2 (none on more than 1 screen - some on less)

Wakanda Forever

Strange World

Black Adam (DC must be giving them a sweet deal, or this may be playing well with families due to length and content)

Violent Night

Devotion

Spirited Sing Along

Elf

So a weak Monday across the board and fell below the target I was looking for at Alpha. Needs a very healthy review bump today to stay on course for 18. If the weak jumps continue, could end up just adding 17-21-21-60 or thereabouts for only 260k final at Alpha (range of 15-19, with a midpoint of 17m)

Okay I went for a walk with the dog and realized I should clarify this by saying all of his scientific logic makes sense. And it’s nice that we finally have a reason for the HFR changes. (I particularly like that he noted it’s not really good for 2D).

I’m coming at it more of, you can absolutely perfect your perfect pecan pie recipe; but if I don’t like pecan pie: I will appreciate that you baked the flaky crust to Paul Hollywood Handshake Levels, but I’m not gonna take more than one or two polite bites.
