The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

Recommended Posts

Halloween Ends, counted today at 12pm EST for today:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 225 (7 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 177 (5 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 57 (6 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 13 (6 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 89 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 169 (9 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 827 (18 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 1.557.

Up good 52% since Tuesday.

Comps (all counted on Thursday for Thursday): Scream (3.5M from previews) had 1.581 sold tickets,
AQP II (4.8M) had 1.582 sold tickets,
The Forever Purge (1.3M) had 241 sold tickets
and Halloween Kills (4.85M) had 1.314 sold tickets = x1.185 for HE = 5.75M from previews.

Halloween Ends, counted today at 12pm EST for Friday, October 14:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 412 (16 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 174 (14 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 96 (10 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 21 (10 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 53 (8 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 103 (17 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 651 (17 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 1.561. That's a good Thursday-Friday ratio. A bit worse than that of Halloween Kills though.

Up very solid 64% since Tuesday (smaller horror films have sometimes even better jumps but on that level, 64% are definitely good).
Comps (all counted on Thursday for Friday): Scream had 1.409 sold tickets,
The Conjuring 3 had 1.435 sold tickets
and HK (17.95M true Friday) had 1.575 sold tickets = 99% for HE = 17.8M true Friday for Halloween Ends (would be 5.7M+17.8M = 23.5M Thursday + Friday judging from my theaters).

Due to the decent jumps I'm more optimistic now than I was on Tuesday. And I think that it's the last part of the series (maybe) will definitely help.
I guess it will be more frontloaded than Halloween Kills so 45M+ OW would be my guess.

Halloween Ends preview night report for the Salt Lake Valley, counted 2:30 PM MST. Cinemark SLC Sugarhouse, Cinemark Draper XD, and Cinemark Farmington XD.

Sugarhouse- 64

Draper- 63

Farmington- 89

Total tix sold-216

71.7% of NOPE = $4.59M

227% of Smile = 4.45

213% of Black Phone (Sugarhouse only) = 6.83

Salt Lake Valley for this is actually trailing DWD, but the showings I've been looking at on the AMC website for the East Coast and South were all indicating a 25-30% rise over yesterday and that was several hours ago so it seems to be having a good final sprint elsewhere. I'll go with 5.5/44.

Halloween Ends (Friday only)

Sept 14 (T-1)

SW/Toronto Ontario

By the time I got to Thur times show times already gone and past so just focussed on Friday. Will probably do a Friday final tomorrow-missed Smile though so will only have Nope (which Halloween Ends seems to be tracking similar, if anything a bit better)

Also just saw the news that Black Adam is officially the last WB movie of 2022 after House Party moved out of December (meaning they have not a single entry in the holiday sweepstakes this year). Hopefully it overperforms because what a mess.

Is it true that they simply dont have enough money to market anything else this year?

I don't know about that (kinda checked out on the whole saga surrounding them a while back) but it wouldn't surprise me. They're gonna put out a grand total of...6 movies in theaters this year. Rough, especially when one considers Universal released 3x the amount of movies in 2022.

Trying to remember the last time a film studio was doing so poorly that they came out and said they can't afford to market films. It surprised me reading that going about-certainly suggests that WB are definitely on the back foot here though.

I'm pretty sure Searchlight is its own studio within Disney with its own marketing team and everything, like Focus and SPC are for Universal and Sony. The 20th Century Studios titles are grouped together with Disney/Marvel/Star Wars on their FYC page.
