BO Germany/Austria: Dune first 2024 blockbuster (3mil admissions)

Recommended Posts

I can only speak for my theater, but Honig im Kopf has been marketed relentlessly here. They even showed like 3-4 complete scenes from the movie and one trailer in front of my Hobbit 3 screening. While that may have oversaturated the audience, it could also lead to a huge opening IMO.

Here in Austria, Til Schweiger is not that much of a draw so I can't say much here but an additional big opening would be nice since Austria had the fewest admissions since god-knows-when in 2014.

First weekend trend for Germany:

#1: Hobbit3 - 875k admissions (-10%), new nr.1 for Germany 2014 with more than 4,2mil total, but a bit below my 900k estimate.

#2: Honig im Kopf - 750k admissions!! I was counting on more than 500k and hoping for 600 but 750 is incredible!

#3: Exodus - 350k, I was counting on 300k so that's also better than expected!

#4: NatM2 - 240k, flat or even up from last week! Good after the lukewarm opening.

#5: Paddington - 200k (-5%)

#6: Bibi%Tina2 - 225k (incl. previews, weekend-only will probably be behind Paddington), that's exactly within expectations and a bit better than B&T1 (which, btw, is still playing in a few theaters)

#7: MJ1 - 110k (-35%, something had to lose screens with all those openers, still respectable)

#8: Penguins - 100k (-20%)

#9 will probably be "The Theory of Everything" which manages a good PTA in its select theaters.

Overall, a very very very strong weekend for theaters! :D

Yep, will be close for H3 - if this number holds, it will be about 200k behind H1 and 100k ahead of H2 after Sunday. Of course, H1 had much less competition in its 3rd weekend (only big opener was Life of Pi with 500k); there were only 3 releases over 200k admissions (here's the 2012 link); but the same weekend last year was even stronger than this year (link to 2013)

Well, the final weekend trend was off 75K admissions last week. So maybe TH will be over 900.000 adm after all.

Saturday trend on insidekino - heavy snow in southern Germany dampens the numbers a bit, everything except kids stuff is dropping a few percent from the first trend.

Don't worry I was in Munich last night to take a plane back to Barcelona and it was just 1 cm snow :) it was snowing all over Bayern but it was pretty light.

There's maybe a misunterdtanding here - the problem with snow is not that it's making it difficult to reach the theater. The problem with snow is that, as soon as it drops, people are thinking of outdoors activities - skiing, sled-driving, building a snowman ... watching a movie, in Germany, is always only 2nd choice. It's the same thing during the year with sunny weekends - everyone's outdoors, BBQing or wandering or biking or sitting in a beer garden - theaters are emtpy.

Sorry! It was my fault. I always spend Christmas at my aunt's place near Nürnberg. This Christmas Day we were watching Frozen, wishing for snow :P

Good to excellent numbers for the openers (except Exodus which was still "ok"), soft drops, and a new nr.1 for Germany! The top 3 are still in release, and after the strong opening, "Honig im Kopf" is a new contender for #2 of 2014 behind Hobbit3.

btw, QecqoafaBD went up a bit from last weekend and is still nr.2 for 2014, 50k admissions ahead of MJ1.

In Austria, "Streif" - a docu-drama about the Kitzbühel downhill race event - was nr.2 for the weekend behind Hobbit3, really excellent start!

Next weekend: Only one wide opener - "Fury" - with mixed reviews, so the question is: Who will win the first 2015 weekend - "Honig im Kopf" with a super hold, or Hobbit3 again? Fury should make it to nr.3.

presales for the weekend see Hobbit3 in front of HiK but I suspect that, as a 3D movie, H3 gets more presales while HiK might attract more walk-in business. In US$, H3 will come out nr.1 anyway. As to "Fury" - well, it's not flopping but atm I would give it 250k admissions max (going by my theater, 150k), another really mediocre opening.
