BO Germany/Austria: Dune first 2024 blockbuster (3mil admissions)

Recommended Posts

Just to give an impression how steady "Honig im Kopf" is going, its weekend numbers:

#1: 678k

#2: 735k

#3: 584k

#4: 600k (estimate)

It remembers me to Frozen in Japan or 8 apellidos vascos in Spain. I love this kind of runs :)

Just saw the film; it's really a 9/10, surprisingly good for the difficult theme - you can discuss Schweiger's acting abilities all you want but as a director, this is as fine a release in his portfolio as any director could wish for. It's fantastic that this will be Germany's nr.2 for 2014 in the end, and I wouldn't even rule out nr.1 - I see it doing more than 5mil but atm it's not yet really dropping so hard to say how far it can go over.

But I don't see the remake possiblities. If Hollywood remakes this, they would go for a PG13 and that's just not possible without losing some of the raw power at play here.

thx a lot for your thoughts!  cool that the movie is worthy!

Hopefully we'll get the release date here soon like with most of his movies

Final weekend estimates for Germany, and it's looking better!

#1: HiK - 600k admissions (+5%)

#2: Taken3 - 240k (-40%, not bad - will have a better total than T2)

#3: LbC - 160k (-25%, nice!)

#4: Hobbit3 - 130k (-45%; H2 had 140k that weekend, so H3 is still in front by more than 100k)

#5 - and best opener: "Frau Müller muss weg" - 120k

#6: B&T2 - 105k (-25%)

#7: Paddibgton - 75k (-30%)

#8/9: Annie and Unbroken with 75k each.

The story here is the domestic comedy. In my preview I mentioned that I saw no breakout potential for any opener and here I am already proven wrong! "Frau Müller muss weg" is playing in less than 200 theaters (compared to Annie and Unbroken's 400/350), so that's nearly 1000 admissions per theater this weekend - blockbuster stuff, and with an expansian over the next week, a total in the 2mil admissions range seems possible. (hard to tell atm, some movies do better on expansion while others are not able to cross from inner-city tastes to the general audience)

btw, it's nice how in the Top5 Sönke Wortmann (writer/director of FMmw) and Til Schweiger (writer/director/actor of "Honig im Kopf") have a meeting; they crossed paths once before, 20 years ago,  when Schweiger was acting in Wortmann's gay-comicbook-adaption "Der bewegte Mann", one of the most successful german comedies of the 90s.

Love to see how "the same movies" do not rule. I was a bit tired to see always the same movies and franchises leading everywhere. With these good data from German market of those 2 local films, adding American Sniper success and some others in other markets last year we see that there is more movies beyond "the same than always". Glad to see it.

MarkG from insidekino has predicted his 2015 blockbuster list for Germany (>3mil admissions) and it's got 11 entries ... wow. Of course, it's no championship year, and the lineup does look better, but if this comes true it would be incredible (2014 had only 4 releases crossing the 3mil treshold, and non has crossed 6mil until now, even if Hobbit3 and HiK should both arrive there hopefully). It's just, with ticket prices as they are and 3D and so on - I can definitely see some of those missing the mark since audiences econimise on repeat viewings especially for 3D releases.

"Honig im Kopf" extremely strong, with a good chance to overtake Hobbit3.

Among openers, "Frau Müller muss weg" far surpassed expectations and should see a nice increase next week with an expansion; "Wild" managed a good PTA on its few screens but I think it won't profit that much from an expansion - the comedy with its teacher-parents-conflicts theme has much wider appeal.

"Annie" and "Unbroken" didn't cause much stir as expected, but I'm still shocked just how bad Annie is doing.

Next weekend:

For families, "Big Hero 6" should be attractive but I guess 300k admissions is about the ceiling - though it might enjoy a nice run later on, with holidays on the horizon. "Mortdecai" - hmm, hard to gauge, Depp is still a bit of a draw but nowhere near as much as he was. If I'd had to bet, I'd say fewer admissions than BH6. "Ouija" - should do well, horror fans will be hungry after the holidays, maybe as high as 250k. My personal favourite of this week's releases, "The Imitation Game", has good reviews but not that many screens - 150k admissions max I'd say. German-turkish comedy "3 Türken und ein Baby" - I know virtually nothing about it, marketing for this stuff doesn't swap over into Austria. Nothing here to dethrone "Honig im Kopf" anyway - another weekend in lead for Til Schweiger!

How does that bode well for BH6? I know Tangled and Frozen were huge blockbusters there, while Ralph was a major flop in Germany, so how do those predicted number compare to these movies?

I think it will do better than WiR, which is ok given the shitty January date - it might grow good legs though with holidays coming.

You can't compare BH6 to those classic tales. They just work better over here. Superhero Stuff was always a tough sell here, even Avengers only barely crossed 2m Admissions.

I think BH6 has a shot at 2m and that would be a great number.

Btw, Ralph was no major flop. It did okay over here for what. Germany likes princesses and animals in animation.

Yeah I noticed that. Doing The Avenegrs numbers for Baymax would be excellent! Although I won't get my hopes up. I'd be fine with around $20-25M at the moment. Edited by Dingdong123
