BO Germany/Austria: Dune first 2024 blockbuster (3mil admissions)

Recommended Posts

Saturday trend - no big changes, except H1 700k instead of 725k. So, while 6mil admissions are locked, 7mil are a bit harder now - I had hoped for 800k this weekend.(Of course, 700k would still be a better 4th weekend than TT and RotK but they had much bigger openings and 4th wekend was 1 week later in January)

Yep, same as the LotR-films, which partly explains the weak opening. Seems to be tied to christmas :) - which leads us to question the wisdom on WB's side to release H3 in summer. Of course, it might work (Harry Potter films were very stable in attendance despite different release dates).

(From my personal POV, H3 can't be here soon enough, I want to watch them back-to-back as just seeing the first 3rd is a bit of a disappointing experience! - especially as H1 has a much lower sightseeing factor than FotR had)

MarkG from insidekino.de with some critical observations on the German market (same problems apply for Austria). While 2012 was a comparatively good year (considered it was a football championship year), there were only 25 productions with >1mil admissions; the year was saved by just 4 blockbusters. Ticket prices are at an alltime high which is bad for medium-sized production it seems, and it's illustrative of the problems that the 2 biggest blockbusters this year (Intouchables, Skyfall) were good old 2D-films; among the Top10, only ranks 3 to 5 are 3D films. Many of his observations are true for other markets; I never understood why movie theaters take the "high ticket price"-option instead of trying to attract as many admissions as possible. Concession and advertising are not-to-be-neglected additional incomes and they depend on admissions, not 3D - it might even be argued that someone who already bought 2 tickets at 3D-premium rate will be less inclined to add some equally overpriced nachos than someone who, say, took advantage of a take-2-pay-1 promotion. Actually, I'm pretty sure about that last point :D

The last weekend of 2012 was excellent for nearly everything. Despite only one big opener (LoP), this weekend was, at least dollar-wise,  the biggest since Dec.2003 when "Return of the King"opened. The only films running out of steam were BD2 (which got bloodsucking competition by opener "Vampirschwestern") and RotG which was obviously very christmassy.

The first weekend of 2013: Very good holds among kid's films (WiR finally had something like a "good" week), steeper drops for adult fare with the exception of LoP which shows blockbuster potential! Hobbit1 had its first steep drop; still, weekend #4 only 40% down from opening weekend - not too shabby.

The openers: Jack Reacher rather soft, Tom Cruise doesn't draw as he used to. SLP is doing ok and seems to get good WOM, in Austria it's even #5.

This week, german comedy "Die Schlussmacher" will be the top opening; will be interesting if it can push the Hobbit from its throne. LoP has super WOM and should continue with a soft drop. "Ritter Rost" opens as the kiddy film but isn't expected to do big numbers (as witnessed by the awkward after-holiday slot).

The 2nd weekend of 2013: A slaughter at the BO, apart from "Schlussmacher" which had a very decent opening. It even managed #1 without 3D, in admissions the lead looks much more impressive: 482k for Schlussmacher, 332k for H1. Jack Reacher opened soft and dropped hard; WiR also has to be considered disappointing, 10mil US$ in Austria+Germany is too little for a Disney tentpole.

This weekend, Django Unchained is finally released, as the only wide opener, and should win the weekend; Christoph Waltz has become a draw and reviews are good (as are presales).

Sunday trend for Germany weekend (just a normal weekend here, no extra holidays!):DU: 800k (outstanding opening!)Schlussmacher: 375k (outstanding hold!)H1: 160kLoP: 140kWithout any definite numbers yet it's already clear that DU will become Tarantino's biggest hit yet in Germany (IB: 2,1mil admission, PulpF: 1,6mil). Very good holds for most films - all things considered a weekend to make theater-owners' hearts sing!
