Why is it worrying for you that they don't use Synchronsprechern? Why can't a regular actor do a nice job?

It's hard for me to imagine, as there is no such thing as a designated dubber for English audiences.

And it's also not easy to explain what I mean ;). The regular actors have mostly(?) some experiences but are no professional dubber. They are probably not bad but I doubt that they are as good as the really fine normal dubber. I remember some films where the method to hire regular German actors/comedians/singers did not work. Sometimes the timing just didn't fit perfectly and we are used to hear perfectly fitting dubbes and as I said above often with very charismatic voices too.
But OTOH sometimes it works. For example in „How to Train Your Dragon“ the dubber were partly regular German actors who did not only a good job but also let the Vikings speak an East Frisian dialect and I liked it a lot. Ice Age is another example for a successful mix: Sid is spoken by somebody who is mostly known as a comedian (Otto Waalkes) but the rest of the crew are professional dubber (who are also actors).

So let's see. When this was discussed on German websites the reactions were very mixed: Some said give them a chance, some said this lessens their interest in the film. Especially many said they would have loved to hear the German voice of Bill Murray as Balu/Baloo.

By the way you made the 3000th post in that tread ;).

Well, to me, dubbing is dubbing, and I generally prefer the original language over any dub.

But what were you saying about an East Frisian dialect?

Isn't Frisian a separate language, too?

Well, there can be a big difference but I don't know how to explain that to somebody who doesn't need dubbing.

No, not the East Frisian dialect which is spoken in Northern Germany. Even if someone from Bavaria would almost think that it is a seperate language (and conversely) ;). I do not mean the original Frisian which is extremely rarely spoken in the Netherlands and which is maybe understandable by Germans who live in (Eastern) Friesland but not from all German speaking people. Boy, this is a more difficult question than I first thought...

Edit: I considered to write Low German/plattdeutsch instead of East Frisian but everyone in Germany knows what is meant. And I don't know how much blend exists between Low German and the original Frisian language.

The whole dubbing theme is very complex and it's true the commercial success of a release can be seriously damaged by bad dubbing (and the other way round ... there are quite a few examples of creative dubbing that led to surprising successes) - the thing is, you never know in advance if it works. Also, some of the dubbing is based on current popularity of the speakers (as is the case for many animations in Hollywood) - which might lead to success but which also ties the movie's destiny to that of the talent involved, and ultimately leads to accelerated dating. I'm not a friend of this cast-a-celebrity fad :(

What a bad weekend, oh my … not one opener did what I expected it to do - KFP3 and Allegiant with horrible drops from prior entries, and Room's PTA is sad. Among holdovers, most drops were bad too - at least some tresholds were crossed: Zootopia crossed 1.5mil; Deadpool 2.5mil - and with Easter holidays in effect, especially family stuff should see some nice weekdays and decent holds next weekend.

Next weekend: No less than 14 new releases (why at least some of them didn't open one week earlier escapes me) - the biggest one of course BvS which is difficult to predict. Batman always is a hit in Germany (DKR crossed 3mil admission, better than any MCU movie) - MoS otoh nearly flopped with <800k admissions. Always the optimist, I'm hoping BvS will make it to the higher end of this range - an opening in the 1mil admissions range would be nice. MBFGW2 will probably die a fast death (don't know why they didn't release it earlier, there's so little romcom competition atm). RockThe Kasbah won't get much business either.

You are a real optimist ^^

TDKR opened with about 1M admissions in 5 days. I would say 700-800K admissions would already be a success. But of course I hope for more.

Easter will affect it. Are there cinemas closed on Friday?

You're probably right, going by today's and tomorrow's shows at my theater Germany will end up north of 600k but not that much higher. But maybe it will gain momentum over the weekend (provided the movie is good)

That drops are ugly... Why? Weather is rainy. Should have been better, especially for family movies... Maybe it'll go up.

BvS isn't bad at all if you compare it to other SH movies in Germany. Hopefully it isn't to front-loaded.

okay, the 2nd trend is online and it's looking much better for holdovers:

#1: BvS - 650k admissions

#2: Zootopia - 325k (-5%, now we're talking!)

#3: KFP3 - 125k (-25% - still meh)

#4: Der geilste Tag - 110k (-10%)

And BvS still is on track for 650k so not to frontloaded. :)

Today weather is sunny but tomorow should be rainy again. Bad for children who are looking for their easter eggs, good for the cinemas :D

I just realized how badly KFP3 bombed. Zootopia headed to $30m+ with this drop, right?

I don't understand why they waited so long to release KFP3 here only to place it in between Zootopia and Jungle Book with BvS looming over it.

They waited a long time to release KFP3 outside of Asia and North America. I guess they didn't think Zootopia would be a big hit.

That's amazing for Zootopia! How much do you see it grossing in the end?

$30M should be the goal for Zootopia. Needs about 3.2M admissions to reach that mark which should be doable. $30M to $35M is probably where it ends. $40M seems to much, would require 4.25M admissions and after that weekend it'll probably be at 2.23M. With old exchange rates $40M would have been the goal :(

(Probably it's not good to think about exchange rates)

That's great for Zootopia. Thanks for that. So France + Germany total is looking for $60 million which is awesome.
