Brazil Box Office Thread

Recommended Posts

Damn nobody posted the last weekend yet. Sorry let me fix that.

Box office July 9-11

filme renda (R$)
1 Black Widow 11.707.468
2 Fast 9 7.176.366
3 The Croods 2 2.061.304
4 The Conjuring 3 683.095
5 Cruella 163.506
6 The Best Years of a Life 12.941
7 Charlatan 12.575
8 Godzlla vs Kong 10.372
9 Nomadland 8.115
10 Spirit

6.814

Boost of 46% over last weekend with 80% of cinemas opened. Black Widow had a somewhat light opening for a Marvel movie, mostly due to the Disney+ and the piracy. Let's hope it can repeat the Cruella legs to compensate that. The real stars ar the incredible hold of Fast 9 and Croods 2, that pretty much remained flat. Actually Fast 9 is catching up BW on the weekdays, if BW don't pull up some legs now it could fall behind Fast 9 this weekend.

Today released Space Jam 2 on 650 screenings. Every other blockbuster that was supposed to release today got delayed, so good for Warner.

Box office July 16-18

  filme renda (R$)
1 Black Widow 6.855.000
2 Fast 9 5.888.000
3 Space jam - A New Legacy 3.776.000
4 The Croods 2 1.427.000
5 The Conjuring 3 297.000
6 Cruella 97.000
7 Sibyl 13.000
8 Nomadland 12.000
9 Charlatan 11.000
10 The Best Years of a Life 10.700

4th weekend in a row that the top 10 sold more than 850k and F9 reached 3 million tickets total. Black Widow took 1st place again, but just barely. BW and F9 were pretty much tied during the weekdays and the weekend didn't change that. Space Jam 2 was the first Warner movie to be released after the launch of HBO Max in the country and it might have affected the opening.

Next weekend A Quiet Place 2 finally launches, after being delayed like six times.

Box office July 23-25

  filme renda (R$)
1 Fast 9 4.123.000
2 A Quiet Place 2 3.715.000
3 Black Widow 3.314.000
4 Space Jam - A New Legacy 2.682.000

7 The Conjuring 3 98.000
8 Cruella 30.000
9 Padrenostro 13.000
10 Sybil 9.000

20% drop from last week. Fast 9 is back at first and A Quiet Place 2 launched in second with R$3.7M ($4.16M counting thursday). A little surprising since AQP2 had the most screenings from all the movies by a long shot. Right now Black Widow is only R$1M behing The Conjuring 3 to become the second best selling movie of the year.

This weekend is time for Old, The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard and Jungle Cruise. I am seeying quite a push for Old and Jungle Cruise actually, I am curious on how they'll turn out.

A few states began with the school vacations this week- and this gave Space Jam 2 a nice boost during weekdays. Since monday is tracking at 2nd place behind only F9. Also- the governor of São Paulo announced they are laying down more of the restrictions. The theaters are now allowed to stay open until midnight with 80% capacity. We should be seeying some effect on the box office soon.

The biggest movie this weekend will be Jungle Cruise with 700 screenings. This weekend will be fun.

Today was a rough week for Brazil. A fire broke in the brazilian Cinematheque and destroyed several irreplaceable arctifacts and ancient movies from South America's cinema history. This week also passed away Mario Monjadim and Orland Drummond, two legends from brazilian voice acting (They were, respectively, the voices of Shaggy and Scooby. Also a shit ton of other Hanna-Barbera and Looney Tunes characters). Anyway, here is the numbers. I'm gonna try to include the total also as far as possible if they get reported from now on.

Box office 30-1 August

Movie Box Office (R$)             Total (R$)
1 Fast 9  3.010.000 63.500.000
2 Jungle Cruise 2.303.000 2.303.000
3 A Quiet Place II 2.170.000 7.660.000
4 Space Jam - A New Legacy 2.137.000 11.870.000
5 Black Widow 1.836.000 32.683.000
6 Old 1.418.000 1.418.000
7 Croods 2 887.000 12.090.000
8 The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard 362.000 798.000
9 The Conjuring 3 46.000 30.950.000
10 Cruella 10.600 10.750.000

-Slight decrease from last week, but the weekend pretty much stayed flat all things considered.

-Fast 9 remains unbeatable. Is only 27% down despite the several new releases.

-There was some expectations that because Jungle Cruise had some scenes shot in Brasil it would make a big push, but it didn't happen.

-Old failed to hit the top 5, HOWEVER I am not aware on how many screenings Universal gave that movie and I did not saw many sessions. I suspect Universal may have give the movie the lower end. On the other hand The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard totally bombed. No excuse for that one.

-Like I said in the previous post, the mid-week gave a good boost for Space Jam. It can stll get to million tickets sold f it can do it again this week.

-Next week releases The Suicide Squad. DC is pretty popular in the country, let's see if it can do some god for the BO after this disapointing week.

I was waiting for the box office to get back to normal before starting to update the Brazil box office thread again, it's also the reason why I was still on BOT.

Unfortunately it's gonna work differently: box office is gonna take time to recover from Covid and even before Covid it was stagnating due to poor economy and terrible exchange rates and it's been like that for years. Between that and the fact streaming is gonna impact the growth of moviegoing it's likely the Brazilian box office will never reach the potential that was expected of it 10 years again when it had a crazy growth.

What I mean here is that it's not that interesting for me to folow anymore as the constant growth and huge potential were the main appeal, this thread was a nice experience but it's now official other people will have to carry the torch as my interest is shifting to streaming as well as far as movies and TV shows are concerned. I'll leave BOT very soon too as my main reasons to be here aren't here anymore.

Good luck to people who might want to keep the thread alive and updated! :)

Thank you very much for everything @Fullbuster! I tried my best once I saw this thread on coma when I created this account. Lately, keeping this thread alive is all I do on this forum lol

So, for this week The Suicide Squad is out on 1600 screenings, 4th biggest launch of the pandemic. Numbers were not shared, but it had a confortable lead on thursday.

Filme B also noted that july's total sold 6.8 million tickets, what would translate to R$110M+ on the box office. Still a far cry from the normal numbers before the pandemic, but it managed to double the numbers from june, so it's a nice increase.

Box office 6-8 August

Movie Box Office (R$)             Total (R$)
1 The Suicide Squad 7.306.000 7.306.000
2 Fast 9 1.840.000 66.480.000
3 Space Jam - A New Legacy 1.048.000 13.380.000
4 A Quiet Place 2 1.034.000 9.380.000
5 Jungle Cruise 940.000 3.900.000
6 Old 610.000 2.490.000
7 Black Widow 562.000 33.840.000
8 Blackpink the Movie 402.000 485.000
9 The Croods 2 378.000 12.600.000
10 The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard 61.800 999.000

Bad news number 1, the brazilian opening of Suicide Squad came bellow Deadline's prediction. Bad news number 2, every other movie on the list had a bad nasty drop because of a mix of the olympics, the cold, the fear of delta and the fact that TSQ is taking most of the screenings. Bad news number 3, absolutely terrible second week for Jungle Cruise. Despite all of that, the weekend still increased 7% from last week and TSQ still have a month ahead before it releases on HBO Max over here. The opening wasn't that bad all things considered, it can still recover. The surprise this week came from Blackpink charting.

Next week is time for Don't Breath 2 and The Boss Baby 2. The Forever Purge got delayed for september.

Paramount just cancelled the release of Snake Eyes. It was supposed to comed out this thursday with Free Guy. They gave no information on how it will released now or when. Well, it would've bombed anyway so...

Box office 13-15 August

Movie Box Office (R$)             Total (R$)
1 The Suicide Squad 5.203.000 15.000.000
2 The Boss Baby 2 3.167.000 3.167.000
3 Don't Breath 2 1.517.000 1.517.000
4 Fast 9 1.258.000 68.510.000
5 A Quiet Place 2 522.000 10.280.000
6 Space Jam- A New Legacy 485.000 14.170.000
7 Jungle Cruise 457.000 4.660.000
8 Old 313.000 3.040.000
9 Black Widow 202.000 34.270.000
10 Dois + Dois 172.000 172.000

Again, Suicide Squad came slightly lower from Deadline projection lol. But that's okay, a pretty good hold still. The weekend came 3% lower from last weekend, Don't Breath 2 came with double the opening of The Unholy, Boss Baby 2 already beat the total of Trolls 2 and there was small surprise on the local movie Dois + Dois charting in the top 10. Fast 9 is already past 4 million tickets sold and is looks lke Space Jam 2 won't beat 1 million tikets after all, but at least it came close.

Box office 20-22 August

Movie Box Office (R$)             Total (R$)
1 Free Guy 2.814.000 2.814.000
2 The Suicide Squad 2.667.000 19.010.000
3 Boss Baby 2 1.982.000 5.890.000
4 Don't Breath 2 838.000 2.870.000
5 Fast 9 778.000 69.700.000
6 Reminiscence 399.000 399.000
7 Space Jam- A New Legacy 188.000 14.450.000
8 A Quiet Place 2 179.000 10.620.000
9 Jungle Cruise 107.000 4.870.000
10 Old 96.000 3.222.000

This week the state of São Paulo lift most of its restriction from the pandemic. You would think that would help the box office but no. It only meant that bars and music event took priority for the public. In other words, this weekend fell 24% and was the first weekend in two months that the total of the top 10 fell bellow R$10M. August has been way more lackluster than what I was expecting. Oh well.

The Suicide Squad reached the million tickets sold, Fast 9 should pass the R$70M during the week and Black Widow fell off the list. Next weekend hopefully should pull up the numbers, it will release Peter Rabbit 2,  Candyman, Wrath of Man and a bunch of local and european movies.

Box office 28-30 August

Movie Box Office (R$)             Total (R$)
1 Free Guy 1.944.000 5.526.000
2 The Suicide Squad 1.803.000 21.610.000
3 Wath of Man 1.555.000 1.555.000
4 Boss Baby 2 1.317.000 7.721.000
5 Candyman 864.000 864.000
6 Peter Rabbit 2 846.000 846.000
7 Fast 9 492.500 70.674.000
8 Don't Breath 2 338.000 3.520.000
9 Space Jam - A New Legacy 113.000 14.631.000
10 Reminiscence 111.000 616.000

Another miserable week, despite the new releases the box office fell another 5%. Free Guy and TSQ both holded well and are almost tied, and Wrath of Man got in third place despite having less screenings than Candyman and Peter Rabbit 2.

Next week should stop the declining. Shang-Chi, The Forever Purge and After We Fell will release, and all 3 of them have a very big marketing push. If they don't push the box office up at least a bit, we really are in trouble.

How are Shang Chi pre-sales in comparison to BW?

I haven't check out the weekend itself, but the thursday release actually looks pretty good to be honest. Personally my bet is an opening between BW and TSQ from what I saw. Again, I haven't check out the weekend, is just me guessing from the thursday.
