Every movie from last weekend got a boost, even the ones that didn't chart, and Widow, Tom and Jerry and Raya keep making turns on who reaches 1st. Also a pretty good boost for the movies from the Oscar.
ThatWaluigiDude
Demon Slayer finally got a release date on may 13, and War With Grandpa, that was supposed to be released last friday, got delayed for the same day. My opinion? TERRIBLE date for both. In the span of the first 3 weeks of may it will release, besides these two, GvK, Mortal Kombat, The Unholy, Chaos Walking, Promissing Young Woman and Nobody. Waaaay too much blockbusters for a market that only 2 states have their cinemas open and the rest won't have a date to reopen or will only do it mid-to-end may. Not sure what the hell the distributors here are thinking.
ThatWaluigiDude
Godzilla vs Kong's advanced opening is starting today in São Paulo. It will have 170 screenings. A few chains are opening today over there and this will be their big movie for the reopening.
titanic2187
Of course it is nice to see cinema reopening but we still have 2000+ deaths per day ....don't think it is wise to do so...but I assume there will be at least some strict seating arrangement? ThatWaluigiDude
We still gonna get numbers in a couple of hours, but I find weird no update was given for GvK during the weekend...at least with Tom and Jerry and WW84 I had at least some idea on how the release day went. It was also the first movie to do more than 1 million a single weekend since Tom and Jerry debuted with R$ 5,5M in mid-february. Nomadland and T&J also did nice, O Auto da Boa Mentira, the only big local release, failed to enter the top 5.
ThatWaluigiDude
This tuesday passed away from covid, at 42 years old, Paulo Gustavo. He was the star and writer of the trilogy Minha Mãe é Uma Peça (My Mom is a Character, in US). The third movie is currently the top brazilian movie of all time, with R$ 175M at the box office. He was one of the biggest box office pushers from recent years in the country. Edited May 6, 2021 by ThatWaluigiDude
ThatWaluigiDude
Today is the full release of GvK, but The Unholy also releases in 300+ screenings. There is actually a big marketing push for that movie, Sony expects that it surpasses the mexican numbers.
ThatWaluigiDude
Godzilla vs Kong took R$ 4.2M+ for the weekend. My bet is that it should be around R$ 7M total at that point, putting it above Tom and Jerry to become the 2nd highest grossing movie of 2021 so far, behind WW84's R$ 18.7M.
charlie Jatinder
@ThatWaluigiDude how are Demon Slayer pre-sales. Releasing next week.

The only sold-out screening I've found so far was an UCI screening on Rio on thursday. There is only 130 screenings doing pre-sales so far, and that is really not that much, but I believe more should come up before the movie launches. ThatWaluigiDude
Box office May 07-09 filme renda (R$) 1 Godzilla vs Kong 1.981.000 2 The Unholy 776.000 3 Tom and Jerry 90.000 4 Promising Young Woman 90.000 5 Nomadland 88.000 6 Raya and the Last Dragon 63.000 7 The Widow 59.000 8 The Little Things 54.300 9 O Auto da Boa Mentira 43.000 10 My Father 41.000 Ok I have to apologize. By the report that GvK did R$ 4.2M+ on the opening (it did R$ 4.5M to be more specific) I thought it meant the actual release this weekend, but in reality meant the full opening, including what it did on the pre-opening last week and the weekdays until friday, so Tom and Jerry remains as the vice-leaders of the year. Sorry about that. Anyway, this weekend had a 30% boost over last weekend. The Unholy did well for a pandemic movie but I am not sure if Sony will be very happy with that. It didn't breakout as they probably hoped it would. Edited May 10, 2021 by ThatWaluigiDude
ThatWaluigiDude
Final Screening counts: 324 screenings for Chaos Walking, 266 for Demon Slayer, GvK remains on 900. Alagoas and Salvador are joining in reopening their theaters today.
ThatWaluigiDude
A little update for Demon Slayer, the friday on São Paulo was ok at best unfortunately. There was a number of almost empty showings and adding that to the limited screenings...yeeeeeah,I don't like that... Nothing to worry about though. It can still pick up on saturday and on other regions. It was doing much better on pre-sales on Rio anyway. Oh and also, did I told you guys The War With Grandpa got delayed again? It got delayed again guys. Coming up next week with Mortal Kombat.
ThatWaluigiDude
Box office May 13-16 filme renda (R$) 1 Godzilla vs Kong 1.900.000 2 The Unholy 960.000 3 Demon Slayer 536.000 4 Chaos Walking 451.000 5 War With Grandpa 164.000 6 Promising Young Woman 129.000 7 Tom & Jerry 88.000 8 Nomadland 50,000 9 Raya and the Last Dragon 38.000 10 The Little Things 36.600 35% boost over last weekend. The new open theaters helped a lot, it is very promising if the next weeks keep it up with this recovering. GvK remained flat over last weekend, The Unholy is up on the second week (pretty good result btw) and Demon Slayer launched at third. I guess some theaters made pre-screenings of War With Grandpa anyway since it charted. This weekend releases Mortal Kombat and War With Grandpa, and on 27th is time for Cruella and Those Who Wished Me Dead. There has been a lot of debate with the distributors over the high amount of movies releasing in face of the limited amount of theaters open, just the problem I mention a few days ago. Expect more delays to happen. Edited May 17, 2021 by ThatWaluigiDude
ThatWaluigiDude
Mortal Kombat is doing well on pre-sales. It does NOT guarantee a good opening, but it is a good sign. There is a whole lot of dubbed screenings around, I guess they are betting hard on the young audiences. Today Porto Alegre is opening their cinemas. My city is also starting to prepare the reopening...just yesterday I was seeying a report on how the deaths were on a rise and that hospitals were at 98% capacity. Welcome to Brazil 😅
