This isn't the place to talk about how Pixar may have lost its theatrical footing, but putting this 2 weeks after it may prove to not be a great move. Reports of Pixar's death may have been greatly exaggerated.

Universal is going to go from the biggest animated of the year with Mario to lowest with Gillman. Pretty wild.

My guess is that they're more confident in Trolls 3.

The limited promotion seems intentional. Think Uni knew this was looking like a miss and chose to spend as little as they could. Looks like they cancelled the 3D release of this too, not seeing any showtimes in that format anywhere despite initially promoting RealD 3D availability.

I know that a lot of Dreamworks movies are made on the cheap, but this movie looks cheap. All the character designs look like they belong on a Nick Jr. cartoon, and only have slightly better than TV production values in terms of lighting and character animation. It's no wonder something this lame-looking is tracking so low.

Their marketing for it has been pretty abysmal. Maybe they will start marketing within the next two weeks.

Nah, I think the studio has written this one off, and does not want to throw good money away on a useless effort to save what they see is a almost certian flop. Cut your losses.

Universal is particualry cautious about this since, a few years ago, they spent a huge amount of money on last minute marketing to try to   save "Battleship".and just added 100 Million bucks to the red ink. They are probably alot more cautious about huge amounts of marketing money on questionable films after that.

Elemental and this will have underwhelming OWs (they are both tracking to be the second lowest OW of each studio), but there's some hope for good legs since there aren't any family movies releasing in July, and TLM/ATSV will have burnt some demand by then.

Barbie (not rated yet but clearly aiming for a PG) and Haunted Mansion (due to the Disney brand despite the PG-13) are definitely looking to draw families.

The Haunted Mansion is a family movie but that probably DOA but Barbie could appeal to young girls and families.

Remember... Puss In Boots 2 opened to 12 million opening weekend. I'm not saying it will have the same insane legs that Puss had, but good critic reviews and word of mouth might save it a bit, considering there's no animated movie until Ninja Turtles in August.

They were trialling two cuts in April, a PG and PG-13. Feedback was saying that the PG one was cutting out too much to be coherent.

Except Puss in Boots had a visible marketing campaign and early screenings as a show of confidence.

I believe Dreamworks is showing this movie in its entirety on June 15th at Annecy.

And, Regal might be doing some kind of early screening for it on the 19th.

Sadly, I don't think it'll help much if at all.
