I agree that $164.4M is very low and cannot be explained by the exchange rates. Subers said that he couldn't be bothered to update the estimated overall OS number with the actual (i.e. change $790.3M to $792.something), since it doesn't change its overseas rank anyway (and since it will be updated next weekend). He also said that the difference between $164.4 and $167 is due to exchange rates, but as I said I don't think that is the case. It is, as you said, an estimate-actual problem and Disney hasn't provided an actual. However, the Japan page at BOM (updated on Wednesdays), only provides the actual in yen (17.00 billion yen, which is lower than the reported 17.08 billion yen that is mentioned in this forum). The number in dollars ($166.95M) is not an accurate actual, though, as I've already explained. This raises the question of which "actual" number is the most accurate. 17.00 billion yen or 17.08 billion yen?

Now I understand why some of weekly cums drop some weeks for foreign movies. The currency takes a hit and he just puts that rate in for a total even though it lower than the previous weeks cum. Thats just plain stupid. Why even bother. Its so simple to see tge foriegn totals difference from one week to another and come up w a new total.Avatar JapanMar 21 $1,831,944 -20.3% $164,916,593Mar 28 $1,361,675 -25.7% $160,427,652April 4 $1,018,311 -25.2% $162,664,539Yen..........J...........F...........M..........A..........M2010....91.26....90.28....90.56...93.43....91.79The dollar strengthened at the end of march into the beginning of april and this dumbass puts in 160m when the prior week is 164m. He is beyond retarded. An eight year old forrest gump would know better. He is either related to the owner or getting banged by him. Im gonna blast him again. Everyone write the useless fucktard please. Such blatant disregard is unconcsionable in the statistics world.rsubers@boxofficemojo.com Edited by T E Lawrence

On a good note: the yen is testing 101.50 again, a key support level lately. If it breaks we could see a quick 3-5% move. That would bump 7m weekend 200-350k. Subers will foolishly  add up to 8.5m to total run. :excited: My goodness.EditAssuming 17.08be is correct the yen has been close to 102.10 -.20 most of the run. Over 103 briefly and under 102 but always snapping back within a few .01s most of the time. That brings it closevto 167.4 that some reported.. It just broke below 101.50 :bump: !

I understand the dollar total is important for Frozen to beat IM3 worldwide and become the #1 film of 2013 but really at the end of the day, it's the yen total that matters imo.

And yes, changing the dollar total almost every week because of evolutions in the exchange rate is completely idiotic.

I agree. We're tracking all three targets, dollars, yen and admissions. Just be fun to see the dollars pop even further. Thats what is looked at mostly in the end and HP7.2 could come into play.*I also now see why SA is 230 on BOM instead of 244m. The dollar rose just before his reported weeks thereby losing 14m from the beginning of the run. Edited by T E Lawrence

I was just looking at the foreign grosses for Frozen and noticed the same thing at the end of the run for the Czech Republic, it went down the last 2 weeks there. I guess it should have ended there 2 weeks earlier. :P

Czech Republic

March 13-16 $10,798 ($1,570,846)

March 20-23 $5,222 ($1,558,730)

March 27-30 $2,860 ($1,558,657)

so your admitting that 143m reported 10 days ago is off due to subers exchange expertise.

I have insufficient data to decide whether that was off or not. But according to a post in this thread, the $144.4M total that was estimated here in the forum was $1.1M more than the actual (I can't be bothered to find that post but it's in pages 180-182 I think). So maybe the $143.2M was actually accurate. Last week, though, $164.4M was definitely low. However, moving on to this week, indeed, these numbers are very encouraging. Let's hope it drops less than 10% this weekend (imo very likely).

The thing is, he claims these issues (regarding exchange rates) are minutiae that he doesn't have time to address.

And since it's a private-owned website, fair enough, he can do whatever he and the owners want.

What I'm bothered by is the fact that he claims the website is accurate and comprehensible. Clearly that is far from the truth. And by the way, if you're on Twitter, don't say that to him cuz he'll block you. As previously said, beyond retarded.

Regarding this issue of decreases, sometimes it is due to exchange rates but sometimes he posts decreases even in the national currency, so I have no clue what is going on. He or his sources might count backwards sometimes, idk.

e.g.

Toy Story 3 in Japan

Total as of September 18–19, 2010: ¥10,791,686,065

Total as of September 25–26, 2010: ¥10,659,750,457

If any of you have any other explanation besides Subers's utter retardation, please enlighten me.

Here is the most outrageous example

http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=intl&country=BR&id=rio.htm

They stopped tracking Rio in Brazil at almost $43 mln in June of 2011

19 months after that it reappeared in Brazil box office charts with 33.55 mln

$10 mln disappeared thanks to exchange rates.

Wow, that's so bad it's actually pretty funny.

I don't get why it's so hard to do proper updates overseas. They update once a week, so every week all they have to do is convert that weeks total to $ using the current exchange rate and add it to the previous total, which should also have been done each week using the exchange rate at the time. Every week would be fairly accurate and the total would accurately reflect the exchange rate through a movies run, even if there were big changes over part of it..

Simple addition, add the latest weekly total using the current exchange rate to the previous cumulative total, just keep doing that each week. and ridiculous things like negative weekly totals wouldn't happen.

Okay people. Time for another challenge. I projected 165m for the end of GW two weeks ago and there were a lot of non believers judging by so many 200m and below predictions. Mid 160s is going to happen by sunday. Now the question is what kind of hold this weekend and legs are to follow. Its very simple, yet not, to come up with a final number. Determine what the weekend will be, apply a multiplier and add to 165-168m.6m x 10?7m x 15?8m x 20?This is not a revision. The first round stays intact. Someone in the top 5 will win that one. Well, probably me :P or boxx if it fades.Take the week to contemplate it, due by 1200 Tokyo saturday, 11pm ny friday. This could be months before its decided, if you're all not too low. Triple crown!

A look back at prediction pre and post GW. After what appears to be another strong hold of 12m+ for the week and a 179m total, it looks like 30% drops ain't happening soon and 215 or lower is NEVER going to happen. If it starts a steady decline of 20% per week and closes in june 230 would be reached. not likely. 20% declines into june and flatten out at 2m per week for an extended run into summer like other top 5 phenoms, 250m. Possible but likely higher. 15% declines into July and closes, 250m, continues into summer w midweeks doubling, 280m. an extended run beyond that into dec, 300m 10% average declines until mid July, at the rate its going, why not, 255m then summer boost and 300m reached by the end of summer plus extended run.Holds flat a few weeks and has nominal declines until summer then boosts and extends. Nice! I knew there was gonna be a report about moving to #6 all time. That's like what, 173-174m? Higher than the numbers estimated here. So 13m+ week?
