JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

I dont think he's a hater. He's just posting facts about BO. He also really loves HTTYD2. Just chillax. Cheezus

lol.  No.  He is a hater.  WIsh he would just come right out and admit that he wanted Frozen to fail in its efforts to topple Spirited Away.  Now, all of a sudden, in the 12th hour, he somehow finds a way to make it even more difficult for Frozen to beat SA's dollar record.

I will not agree with Spirited Away's new number $249 million

It was hard enough to convince myself with the $244 million, up from the $230 million some sites were saying.

All of these point to $230 million or less from Japan:

http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&id=spiritedaway.htm

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245429/business

http://www.boxofficeprophets.com/tickermaster/listing.cfm?TMID=594:Spirited_Away_(Sen_to_Chihiro_no_kamikakushi)

http://variety.com/2002/digital/awards/japan-box-office-spirited-away-1117860800/

All of them are American box office websites. Keep that in mind.

Is this weekend or weekly? If it is weekend, I assume it means that Frozen hasn't scored the highest-grossing 16th weekend of all time, right?

Weekly, but it didn't have the highest 16th weekend anyway, Spirited Away made 305m.

lol.  Corpse, you are one big time Frozen hater, judging by posts like these and your likes of posts in the Domestic Forum that are critical of Frozen (the posts were regarding how much better HTTYD2 is than Frozen).

Just be very very glad Disney botched the DVD/bluray release dates and didn't let Frozen run for another 4-6 weeks while it was still banking $12 million weeks.  Spirited Away would have gone down in flames.  lol.  It would have been EPIC on here.

Yeah, I'm not hate lol.  I saw Frozen 3 times in theaters and would say it's my 2nd/3rd favorite from that I saw last year.  I still need to see a lot of 2013 films, but Frozen probably has a secure spot in my Top 5 of last year regardless.

And I didn't change its USD total.  A member on KJ said I was wrong with the Spirited Away $244 million figure and posted a detailed analysis of its run that can't really be disputed.  It was really good, and far better than using BOM or a source that uses BOM for their articles.  At BOM you have it increases or decreasing late in its run, and a film doesn't lose money from week to week. ;)  Not to mention the fact they fail to track anything once it falls out of the Top 10.  BOM is wrong on many, many films, not just Spirited Away.

Annayya:

You're using sources that use BOM to provide their USD figures.

>imdb is wrong of course because they have its run ending on March 2nd which I believe is before it got its Oscar boost.  It was still in the Top 10 until the end of March, and would have been playing in April or much later, too.

>boxofficeprophets is just using BOM to provide their USD figures, and the other films mentioned in their article are wrong, too.

>thenumbers is using BOMs figures almost to the exact dollar.  Wrong by default.

>Variety is well off too considering that article was released in February of 2002.  Spirited Away was still very much in wide release for at least 2 months after that article, and still in the Top 10 for 5 more weeks post that article.

7月16日には、MovieNEX(ブルーレイ、DVD、デジタルコピーのパッケージ)が発売されるが、映画馆での兴行は継続される予定。"

So, this report says Frozen will stay in the theater even after the release of its BD....(7.16)

Well, at least there's that.  It may not beat DH2WW (though it would be awesome for it to by some miracle), but it still has a chance of beating SA?

Not unless it gets a big boost at some point. This means it still has a chance of beating Titanic.

I don't think there's a big difference between the two. If it manages one, it will likely achieve the other too.

I don't think either SA or DH2 is in the cards anymore. I'm mostly hoping it can get at least another $30m or so in order to top Avengers' OS gross. Or a little more so it can get to $900m.

Even that feels like a long shot, though. Ah, well.

Someone asked me back when I posted the 2013 Yearly Results, what does a film earning ¥1 billion in Japan equate to in the US?

So here is a rough chart showing how much a film earning ¥1 billion, ¥2 billion, ¥5 billion, ¥10 at the box-office in Japan would compare to in USD terms when comparing the number of films that have reached each respective mark:

Approx. Yen to Dollar Equivalent (Japan vs US)

¥30.0 billion = $750 million
¥25.0 billion = $600 million
¥20.0 billion = $500 million
¥17.5 billion = $475 million
¥15.0 billion = $450 million
¥12.5 billion = $400 million
¥10.0 billion = $350 million
¥9.0 billion = $320 million
¥8.0 billion = $290 million
¥7.0 billion = $260 million
¥6.0 billion = $240 million
¥5.0 billion = $220 million
¥4.0 billion = $180 million
¥3.0 billion = $150 million
¥2.5 billion = $125 million
¥2.0 billion = $100 million
¥1.5 billion = $75 million
¥1.0 billion = $50 million

Around 60 films reach ¥1 billion or more in Japan each year, which is pretty much the same number of films reaching $50 million in the US in recent years.

So, Frozen for example is about the equivalent of a $600 million film right now, while Thermae Romae II would be about the equivalent of a $190 million film, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would be about the equivalent of a $150 million film.  X-Men: Days of Future Past just hit ¥1 billion this past weekend, so it would be about the same as a $50 million film.
