JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Next year should be a good year for Hollywood movies in Japan with TASM2 and Transformers 4.

Captain America 2 should benefit from the "Avengers effect" like Iron Man 3 this year.

The only drawback : no Pixar movie in 2014 :(

I have a feeling that none of the films you mentioned will be the biggest Hollywood film next year, they aren't that big of a franchise.

Spiderman is a big franchise there.

More mid size, the last one was the 14th biggest film in 2012 with 40M, Transformers 3 was bigger but that was when 3D was much more popular and I think that it's going to drop. If either of those films are the biggest Hollywood film, then Hollywood is probably in big trouble there.

2013's Top 5 Biggest Winners

Posted Image
1. *Les Miserables*
>Highest-grossing Musical of all-time.
>2nd Highest-grossing film of all-time to never rank #1.
>11-Consecutive weeks in the Top 5.
>13-Consecutive weeks in the Top 10.
>3-Consecutive weekend increases (without expansion).
>Only the 4th film since 1998 to achieve a multiplier over 20 (and without expanding), joining 'Spirited Away', 'Avatar', and 'Departures'.

Posted Image
2. *Japanese Anime Films*
Where to begin here! Animated films completely dominated 2013.

>The Wind Rises
>First film in 3 years to gross over ¥10 billion; first 2D film in 5 years to gross over ¥10 billion.
>8-Consecutive weeks at #1.
>14-Consecutive weeks in the Top 10.
>Still in release and could challenge the Top 10 Films of All-Time with success at the Oscars.

>One Piece Film Z
>Broke the opening weekend admissions record for a domestic film, and delivered the biggest opening weekend in 5 years.
>Broke the 2-day opening weekend PSA record.
>Highest-grossing 'One Piece' film of all-time.

>Doraemon (34): Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum
>Biggest opening weekend for a 'Doraemon' film, and the Highest-grossing, Most-attended, 'Doraemon' film of all-time.
>The 'Doraemon' franchise also became the most attended movie franchise of all-time, with over 102 million admissions.

>Detective Conan (17): The Private Eye in the Distant Sea
>Biggest opening weekend for a 'Detective Conan' film, and the Highest-grossing, Most-attended, 'Detective Conan' film of all-time.

Posted Image
3. *Ted*
>Highest-grossing R15+ Comedy of all-time.
>Highest-grossing Imported Comedy since 'Home Alone 2'.
>Achieved a multiplier over 12 with only a couple small expansions and minimal Holiday support.

Posted Image
4. *Aniplex Releases*
From Steins Gate to Anohana, every Aniplex release this year performed exceptionally well in only limited release (often fewer than 50 screens). Aniplex has never had a better year, and despite playing on 1/10th of the screens of Hollywood blockbusters or big-budget Domestic films, they were able to match or even beat a number of them.

Posted Image
5. *Like Father, Like Son*
>Distributor Gaga's Highest-grossing domestic film of all-time.
>Achieved a multiplier over 10 outside of Summer or Holidays.
>Earned a Top 10 spot (#10) in 2013, a very difficult goal for an original film.

-Honorable Mention:
*Monsters University*
>4th Highest-grossing, and 4th Most-attended Pixar film of all-time.
>Most-attended imported-film in 3 years.

2013's Top 5 Biggest Losers

Posted Image
1. *Gatchaman*
>Most-expensive local production of all-time by a huge margin according to reports of a budget of ¥8 billion ($80 million)!
>Final gross hasn't been released, but it's believed to be below ¥500 million ($5 million) making it the biggest financial failure in... probably ever considering budgets for domestic films rarely exceed ¥1 billion, and the previous record was just over ¥3 billion (Ponyo)

Posted Image
2. *The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey*
>86% decline in gross compared to Return of the King, and 82% and 79% drops from Fellowship of the Ring and Two Towers... Alrighty then.
>Ranked outside the Top 35 films of 2013. Let's hope moving the franchise back to its original Spring release can help future films recover.

Posted Image
3. *Space Captain Harlock*
>Another absurdly record budget bust of a film with a rumored budget of ¥5-6 billion ($50-60 million)!
>The final gross hasn't been released yet, either, but tracking ended just over ¥500 million ($5 million). If not forGatchaman, it would have been one of (if not the) biggest domestic bomb ever.

Posted Image
4. *Toho's original live-action releases*
>Many of Toho's original live-action films failed to find an audience at the box-office this year despite fine release dates and capable filmmakers and cast member. RealHospitality Department, and Beyond the Memories fared the worst with grosses well below the ¥1 billion ($10 million) mark.

Posted Image
5. *After Earth*
>Prime Summer release spot, Will Smith, interesting... plot/setting, and it still earned less than ¥1 billion ($8/9 million) and didn't come near 1 million admissions. I would say it's one of Hollywood's worst high-profile performers in recent years, but47 Ronin just happened making After Earth's performance actually look somewhat decent.

Dishonorable Mention:
*Pacific Rim*
>Grossed a disappointing ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) and barely cracked 1 million admissions despite being released during one of biggest weeks of the year (Obon).

Do you realy think there is a chance for this to recover? I am quite pessimistic about it.

Anyway, great summary of the year :)

Corpse wrote the article on World of KJ.

I just repost it here.

And I think DOS will have a tiny increase in Japan because of less competition.

Weekend (and overall) numbers are still unavailable due to New Year, so in the meantime, here are the predictions for 2014:

Top Films of 2014 [PREDICTIONS]

Japanese
¥7.0-8.0 billion ($70-80 million) - Marnie's Memories (Toho) July
¥5.0-6.0 billion ($50-60 million) - The Eternal Zero (Toho) Dec.
¥4.0-5.0 billion ($40-50 million) - Thermae Romae II (Toho) Apr.
¥4.0-4.5 billion ($40-45 million) - Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan (Toho) Dec.
¥3.5-4.0 billion ($35-40 million) - Pokemon: The Cocoon of Destruction (Toho) July
¥3.5-4.0 billion ($35-40 million) - Doraemon: New Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party of Five (Toho) Mar.
¥3.0-3.5 billion ($30-35 million) - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Aug.
¥3.0-3.5 billion ($30-35 million) - Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension (Toho) Apr.
¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million) - All-Round Appraiser Q: Mona Lisa’s Eye (Toho) May
¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) Aug.
¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million) - Rurouni Kenshin: The End of a Legend Arc (Warner Bros.) Sept.
¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million) - Lupin III (Toho) Aug.
¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million) - Partners the Movie 3 (Toei) Apr.

Imported
¥3.5-4.0 billion ($35-40 million) - Resident Evil VI (Sony) Sept.
¥3.5-4.0 billion ($35-40 million) - Transformers: Age of Extinction (Paramount) Aug.
¥3.0-4.0 billion ($30-40 million) - Godzilla (Toho) July
¥3.0-3.5 billion ($30-35 million) - The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Sony) Apr.
¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million) - Frozen (Disney) Mar.
¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million) - Gravity (Warner Bros.) Dec.
¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million) - Maleficent (Disney) Apr.

I don't think anything this year will approach the ¥10 billion ($100 million) mark. The Wind Rises was the first film to exceed the milestone in 3 years (5 years for a 2D release), and I don't think anything will achieve it again for a few years.

Japan looks to have more ¥3-4 billion ($30-40 million) tier films than last year (helped by the fact of two Doraemon and two Rurouni Kenshin titles), so that's a plus. And there always seems to be one film that greatly exceeds expectations (2011'sConfessions, 2012's A Ghost of a Chance, 2013's Like Father, Like Son), too.

Hollywood unfortunately has a... really bad schedule. There isn't a single major release (Harry Potter, Pirates, Star Wars, Pixar), so they're going to be in for a very rough year. And with 3D shares way down compared to 2010-2012, it's doubtful either Resident Evil or Transformers will match their last entries. Hopefully Frozen, or maybe Godzilla can manage to breakout though

Weekend Ranking [01/04-05]
(New Year 2014)

01 (01) The Eternal Zero (Toho) Week 3
02 (02) Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan (Toho) Week 5
03 (04) Gravity (Warner Bros.) Week 4
04 (06) Planes (Disney) Week 3
05 (05) The Liar and His Lover (Toho) Week 4
06 (03) Hunter X Hunter: The Final Mission (Toho) Week 2
07 (09) The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Toho) Week 7
08 (07) Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider Gaim & Wizard (Toei) Week 4
09 (08) Walking with Dinosaurs (Fox) Week 3
10 (14) Ask This of Riku (Toei) Week 5
11 (12) A Tale of Samurai Cooking (Shochiku) Week 4
12 (10) The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Kadokawa) Week 2

>The Eternal Zero's numbers have been some of the most-anticipated in a long time over the past couple weeks with holidays delaying everything. Ticket sales all week long appeared incredibly impressive, and they certainly were:

Over the New Year weekend, the film saw a 46% third weekend increase and grossed ¥531,728,400 ($5.2 million) and 414,397 admissions. Not only is the 46% third weekend increase huge, but it's down just 2% compared to its opening weekend! After 16-days, the film has earned ¥3,202,870,000 ($30.9 million) and 2,580,000 admissions (a multiplier of 6 after just three weeks). It is well on track to exceed ¥5 billion ($50 million), and could potentially end up with over ¥6 billion ($60 million+).

The last original live-action film to gross over ¥6 billion was Avatar.

>Lupin III Vs. Detective Conan was also doing big numbers over the holidays, and now has a 30-day total of¥3,533,730,000 ($34.1 million) and 2,990,000 admissions. It should exceed the ¥4 billion ($40 million) milestone in a little over a week and ultimately finish with ¥4.5 billion ($45 million) or slightly higher.

>Gravity is the highlight of Hollywood's New Year in Japan, seeing a 23% increase and rising to 3rd place. The new total is now ¥2,079,400,000 ($20.0 million) and will be aiming for ¥3 billion+ ($30 million+) with some help from its likely success at the Golden Globes or even the Oscars late in its run.

>Ask This of Riku saw a massive 124% increase and re-enters the Top 10 after falling out two weeks ago

>The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is receiving even worse reviews than the first film, barely debuted in the Top 10 and now out of the Top 10, and is currently down nearly 50% from it's predecessor after two weeks...
