JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Sorry to hear about the awful Typhoon that just hit Japan, hope our members here are ok. Obviously the box-office will take a huge hit because of it.

It's not as bad as any media source may be saying it is.

It's caused a lot of flooding in the Kyushu District and the various islands such as Okinawa below it, and some a bit farther north in the Shikoku District, but I've only see 2 deaths reported and I think injuries are still under 100.  And the population in these areas are predominately senior citizens, so that's great news.  There are some very bad flooding areas, and up to 100,000 people are without power in these parts, but the damage is quite minimal considering the size of the storm.

And it's weakened to a Tropical Storm now as it begins to veer off the Japan coast along the most populated regions of Kansai, Chubu and Kanto (they make up 2/3 of Japan's population).  And the box-office will be mostly unaffected by the storm since these regions and parts of the Tohoku region (farther north) make up 75/80% of box-office attendance.

Locals know how to handle these storms well even if they hit at category 4/5 intensity.  Even Super Typhoon Flo only resulted in 30 some deaths and 1,000 or so injuries as it went directly over practically all of Japan in 1990.  And Typhoon Mireille (one of the strongest and deadliest) which affected 41/45 prefectures in Japan caused 52 deaths.

I mean, the deaths are terrible obviously, but had a category 4/5 storm like these hit somewhere else, we'd probably be talking deaths in the hundreds/thousands and more than flooding or housing damages.

So Japan is releasing the Frozen PS4 a few days before the dvd release. How smart of them to try to squeeze some more money out of Japan's Frozen fans. Too bad the design looks super lazy. They should have at least made the Frozen system white or blue! ;)

I would probably buy a PS4 if the Frozen one was available in the US.

Same. I would buy it if it was available either in Australia or Indonesia. I have been wanting to buy PS4 for quite sometime, a Frozen themed PS4 would be perfect.

Weekend Forecast (07/12-13)

Posted Image

01 (01) ¥526 million ($5.2 million), -24%, ¥1.85 billion ($18.2 million), Maleficent (Disney) Week 2
02 (02) ¥182 million ($1.8 million), -30%, ¥850 million ($8.3 million), Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Bros.) week 2
03 (--) ¥165 million ($1.6 million), 0, ¥165 million ($1.6 million), Say, "I Love You" (Shochiku) NEW
04 (03) ¥147 million ($1.4 million), -20%, ¥24.95 billion ($244.8 million), Frozen (Disney) Week 18
05 (04) ¥85 million ($830,000), -28%, ¥1.10 billion ($10.7 million), Mission Impossible: Samurai (Shochiku) Week 4
06 (06) ¥59 million ($570,000), -18%, ¥160 million ($1.5 million), Anpanman: The Appleboy and Everyone's Wishes! (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) Week 2
07 (05) ¥49 million ($480,000), -34%, ¥475 million ($4.6 million), Thirst (Gaga) Week 3
08 (07) ¥42 million ($410,000), -40%, ¥320 million ($3.1 million), The Grudge: The Beginning of the End (Showgate) Week 3
09 (--) ¥35 million ($340,000), 0, ¥45 million ($440,000), Divergent (Kadokawa) NEW
10 (08) ¥29 million ($280,000), -43%, ¥390 million ($3.8 million), Transcendence (Shochiku/Pony Canyon) Week 3

The weekend should have some strong holds with just one notable opener, and most holdovers are maintaining the same screen counts/showtimes as last weekend or seeing increases (Maleficent is even receiving a screen and showtime bump despite already playing very wide already) because of this.

Saturday attendance may be a little subdued from people staying indoors from the Super Typhoon that hit the southern regions of Japan this week (its currently a Tropical Storm moving away from Japan), but Sunday should recover.

>Maleficent should be able to stay above ¥500 million ($5 million), though if it misses, it'll just barely do so.  A drop over 30% looks pretty unlikely.

>Say, "I Love You" will easily be the top debut of the weekend with only Divergent (Which will bomb ala Twilight/The Hunger Games/all YA) as competition.  Pre-sales looked decent, but they kinda slacked off heading into Saturday.  It's probably going to fall below ¥200 million ($2 million) for the weekend, but I hope it can manage to reach the mark since Sota Fukushi is quite hot.

>Also, The Documentary of AKB48: The Time Has Come debuted in 10th place last weekend with ¥44 million.  I see that some stage greetings are either taking place on Friday or Saturday, and if the are occurring on Saturday, then it'll definitely stay in the Top 10 by barely decreasing or likely seeing a small increase.

Very good hold. I just thought it would have a bigger total. It only made around 6,3 million monday-friday. Edited by Ajbg
