JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Wow, so could this be the Japanese equivalent of something like Twilight: New Moon vs. Blind Side in the USA? For those overseas who might not be as aware, The Blind Side opened at #2, $108m behind New Moon opening at #1 (at the time, the third highest-grossing and fifth highest-attended OW), yet Blind Side's legs were so good, and New Moon was so frontloaded, that Blind Side finished with only $40m less than New Moon.

Of course, this situation is also sort of different because both films are animated and have family appeal (even though the "animation = genre"/"animation = family" mindsets are not as strong in Japan as they are in the West). So they were more directly in competition (though, given what I just pointed out, not AS direct as most Westerners would assume)?

BH6 has higher ticket prices so it could end up being equal to Yokai in terms of total gross :)

That's Japan for you.

I'm crunching numbers right now to compare the biggest opening weekends to the highest grossers (many thanks to Corpse's wealth of data). It seems like the biggest openers often tend to end up with lower grosses/admissions than other movies that open much lower.

Of course, this situation is also sort of different because both films are animated and have family appeal (even though the "animation = genre"/"animation = family" mindsets are not as strong in Japan as they are in the West). Yeah, I think they're not as direct as you would assume. "Animation" does not always equal "family". Disney/Pixar movies usually attract older crowds too, while the crowds for movies like Doraemon or Yokai Watch mainly consist of younger kids (and their parents).

Toho at 19.00 PM

BH6 48.364 - will be the biggest day and probably a weekend (its 3rd) bigger than OW (first sign of a kind of frozenite?)

Whaaa? Frozen 2.0? Or maybe it's just because of the holidays. We will know better after the holidays end.

The Avengers grossed $45m in Japan, a great number and we can be hopeful for The Avengers 2 given Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 all increased over their previous adventures.

Yeah, but put it like this: Avengers grossed less than Mal, altought 45M is still good it's still the highest a marvel film ever got. GOTG and TWS weren't a real succes either.

Japan is a market where animated movies and girl-centric movies are clearly dominant, it's absolutely logical to see Maleficent ahead.

So that makes marvel the least succesfull part of Disney, nothing wrong with that. It just doesn't dominate like in the rest of asia
