JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

So what happened to teenagers and young adults being absent from the cinemas thing? Don't tell me grandpas and grandmas are the ones propelling TED.

Honestly I have no explanation for the success of Ted there o_o But with such numbers you can be sure it has a great WOM

Anyaway, 554 japanes movies, i was always wondering what films are counted. All theatrically released? Are pink films counted? Five hundreed seems like a huge number.

Theatrical releases.

Japan has been the releasing over 500/600 films a year since at least 1955, and have released more films every year ahead of the US, UK, etc.  I think only India has been releasing more films each year.

i think i have read somewhere that among theatrical releases japan counts pink films too and they make like half of this five hundreed number.

I think 500 japanese films released every year is too much. What i remember it was lower. I used to follow japanese box office 10 years ago.

There are some numbers release by EIRIN. they count films as feature films and ´all´ films. (although i dont know what exactly all means, films for festivals and very limited theatrical release? - like ´whispering of gods´was? who knows. )

Numbers by EIRIN

All Japan Films

2007 407

2008 418

2009 448

2010 408

2011 441

Japan Feature films (this is probably films in wider theatrical release, although erotic films are counted too)

2007 308

2008 287

2009 239

2010 260

2011 264

From these feature films numbers r-18 rated films count for about 50-70. most of them supposed to be those pinku films.

So, basically there are about 200 japanese films made every year for wider audience. Rigth?

500 is too high. The lowest number of post war year was 1991, only 230 feature films. Highest numbers are slightly over 300 feature films a year. Pinku films make about 20 percent of feature films.

As we can see, there is approx. 200 japanese feature films (excluding pinku) released theatrically, far less number from 500. (last five years it was more like 400, 5 years before more like 300 -  500 is new record)

Anyway 67 percent of box office came from japanese films which is twice as much as a decade ago. excellent, japan. if i dont count india and maybe some subsaharian african countries this is biggest number in the world. Especially in current world where everything is westernized, even indian cinema box office share is decrising and maybe in 10 years HW films will be dominant there, this is great achievment.
