Tgm passed 13b yen in its 19th Weeknd and might become tc highest grossing movie in japan only 600m yen to beat TLS and another 100myen to beat JJK for #2 highest grossing movie of year in japan if avatar 2 underperforms.

Is this possible, well yeah One Piece has gotten very big past few years, but One Piece Stampede (2019) made like $1.3M in NA.

I think it's too optimistic a range and BOP does mention that this is before tracking so I'd take it with quite a bit of salt, but who knows. 10-15M could happen imho though since crunchy is pushing this one quite a bit, I'd be very surprised if it managed that high range though.

Obviously the winner will be this:

I am so excited for Suzume and although it will not be coming to other countries until early 2023 including North America where I live.  I am excited for this b/c I am a fan of Makoto Shinkai other movies.

 

While the other will be in either 2nd or 3rd place depending on if One Piece Film Red other giveaway will affect it:

Suzume PS are starting to look quite solid for the type of film it is to me. I suppose I could run my bot on movix to get an idea but the only comps I'd have for it are JJK and DS, not really super great examples. Can't really say anything about WF (PS will start on wednesday for that since clearly theaters don't seem to think it warranted the extra time) other than a few midnight shows on thursday which are doing pretty mediocre honestly.

Had a trailer for Suzume in Dolby last night, I cannot wait for that, at minimum it's going to be visually stunning.

 

Saw One Piece film Red last night, while I enjoyed it given I'm a newcomer to the franchise, I really cannot fathom how it's so damn big in Japan, especially compared to the last few movies, makes no sense to me at all.

Honestly I wouldn't even consider it a challenge since one will gross at least 10 times more than the other (but obviously a bit less in the opening weekend, maybe 5 times more?)

 

I'm more interested instead in seeing who will gross the most between Black Panther and Black Adam, a real clash between titans 😅

Now, there is that giveaway (3 million copies) to take into account this time which could boost the OW a decent bit.

So, I think it'll either match Weathering With You's OW or see a "small-ish" increase of maybe 5-10% or so.

Wakanda Forever will probably have the standard MCU opening around ¥250-350 million. Very, very few MCU films have opened above that high end without Spider-Man or Avengers attached. The first Black Panther opened to ¥309 million.

So, without looking at presales, I'll go with:

~¥1.1-1.3 billion (OW) / ¥1.6-1.8 billion (3-Day) - Suzume
~¥250-350 million (OW) / ¥350-450 million (3-Day) - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

So, easy #1 debut for Suzume with that, but no surprise there as one of the biggest films of the year. And likely #2 debut for Wakanda Forever, although it does risk settling for #3 if the One Piece Film Red giveaway gives it a similar 100%+ increase like two weeks ago.
