Yes, including 2k previews. Absolutely horrible frontloading. That's a 50% drop...

I wasn't expecting that at all after the good pre sales and Paris 14h...

La Vie Scolaire loses its leadership but has crossed 1M after its third week. It holds remarkably well despite the September period and will definitely go above 1.5M and overtake Patients, the previous movie from the same director. Deux Moi (aka Someone, Somewhere internationally), the latest film from Cédric Klapisch, starts at #3 with a stronger start than Ce qui nous lie (Back to Burgundy). It's heading for 600k. It's still far from his biggest success, L'auberge espagnole (Euro Pudding/Pot Luck) which did nearly 3M admissions back in 2002.

The rest of the top 10 are all continuations, with drops around 40%. TLK will get to the 9.5M mark while OUATIH will cross 2.5M before the end of next week.

Ad Astra does a nice start with a score similar to First Man which released roughly in the same period last year. It's heading towards a 700-800k career score, it will depend on its legs. The latest Woody Allen, A Rainy Day in New York, does a slightly higher score than his latest movie, Wonder Wheel, and will do around 300-350k in the end. Far from his golden period where he could do 1M+ easily. Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which could be the french contender for the Oscars, starts averagely and would end around 250kTrois jours et une vie clearly doesn't get enough success in an oversatured market for 60+ year-old people. Finally, The Goldfinch is a massive bomb, despite a semi-wide release on 240 theaters. Teen Spirit earlier in the year suffered the same fate with similar scores.

Rambo: Last Blood 41,928 (incl. previews) 500

10,955 155
Demain est à nous 7,945 (incl. 6,191 in previews) 180
Bacurau 7,708 130

Au nom de la terre starts very strongly with more than 50k admissions this wednesday, with 37k added through a large preview campaign. It's another success coming for Guillaume Canet as a lead actor, and it could very well do 1M at the end of its theatrical run. Diaphana, the distributor, didn't reach this mark for a movie since It's Only The End of the World from Xavier Dolan in 2016.

Rambo: Last Blood is in second place and starts below Rambo (2008), with nearly 42k admissions - Rambo started at 57k and finished its career at 850k. That last episode should not go further than 700k admissions. Note that the second episode of the saga, First Blood Part II, established back in 1985 the OD and OW records in France (342k OD, 2.075M OW).

Downton Abbey also has its fanbase mobilized in France, with 35k admissions in its first day. Its average per cinema is above 100, which is a good score. But as with many movies coming from series and animes, it could be frontloaded.

Le Dindon is the big crash of the week. Despite having an all-star comedy casting and the widest release this week, the movie featuring Dany Boon (director and lead actor of the most-seen french movie of all time!) heavily bombs with only 22k admissions. It will do below 500k admissions at the end of its career, showing a clear rejection of the public for the movie.

10 Deux moi 94,027 409 -30% 503,743

Very good week for the September period with 10 movies which will cross the 100k admissions mark. When there's such a diverse offering of movies, there's something for everyone.

Au nom de la terre is the surprise hit of this week, finishing first with nearly 375k admissions. The drama about a farmer struggling with debts really connected with the french moviegoers, with very good audience scores (3.9/5 on Allociné). It's definitely on track for 1M and it will be the 9th french movie of the year to reach that number.

Rambo: Last Blood is in second place. It's the lowest start of the long-lasting franchise with 260k admissions. It still attracted a public that was hungry for action movies, as it was nearly a month that no movie in that genre had a wide release since Angel Has Fallen. It's aiming for 700k - but Gemini Man is coming next week and will take a large part of its public.

Downton Abbey also managed to gather its fanbase around the movie with 215k admissions. 500k is a definitive go for the movie adaptation of that famous series. Like I said a few days ago, Le Dindon is one of the largest bombs ever with such a wide release with only 120k admissions. The movie was heavily rejected by the audiences and has very bad reviews (2.3/5 on Allociné). It will not go further than 300k as it will be pulled off many theaters next week, which is a strong letdown for Pathé which distributes the movie.

Movies that are there for more than a week stand strong. Ad Astra is still on pace for 1M despite mixed public reviews (3.0/5 on Allociné), and Inséparables also keeps its drops low following the trail of La Vie Scolaire. It has reached 800k and can still believe to cross 1M. La Vie Scolaire is keeping up with a great career and will attain 1.5M next week, and could finish around 1.8M. It: Chapter Two is heading towards 1.5M and Deux moi will be around 750k at the end of its career. The Lion King is now out of the top 10, but has a -9% drop and is now at 9.625M. The All Saints Day holiday is in two weeks - can it be the final push for TLK to reach the famed 10M and join the 1994 classic?

OD October 2

1,045 (incl. previews) 52

Three wide releases this week, two french films and an american blockbuster. When taking previews into account, J'irai où tu iras takes the lead. Featuring Leïla Bekhti and Géraldine Nakache, which were the lead actresses in the 2010 comedy Tout ce qui brille (All That Glitters) that managed to bring 1.4M tickets and became a cult comedy after. However this is clearly a slow start for J'irai où tu iras as more than 50% of its OD is composed of a large (but successful) preview campaign. It should definitely reach 500k, it could go further (600-700k) thanks to the All Saints Day holiday coming in two weeks.

Disappointing start also for Gemini Man, the 120-fps blockbuster from Ang Lee with a double dose of Will Smith. Despite being the strongest movie on wednesday alone (so without counting the previews), it's still a low number for such a wide release. Smith doesn't seem to bring the money in the bank, and HFR isn't really a selling point at least in France despite a large number of cinemas that propose the movie in that format. 700-750k seem to be a reasonable estimate, going to 1M will be very hard if the movie can't maintain good drops during the fall school break.

Alice et le maire, starring Fabrice Luchini and Anaïs Demoustier, manages to get the best average per cinema with a good start, albeit lower than an earlier film in the year also featuring Luchini (Le Mystère Henri Pick did a 60k OD). They usually have good legs so 800k is a rightful objective for the movie (Henri Pick stopped at 885k).

Other movies have limited releases. Atlantique, being the winner of the Grand Prix in Cannes, makes a mediocre start with only 50 tickets per cinema in average. Cannes this year was basically "Parasited".

France Weekend 40 2019.10.2-10.6 (complete)

Rank Name WKAD Scr Drop TOAD

10 A Rainy Day in New York 80,958 430 -33% 433,015

So Gemini Man takes the lead over the course of the weekend, but with a rather slow start. 1M seems really compromised, especially knowing that Joker will compete on the same demographic. The fall break will help but realistically it will go to 850k. For For Will Smith in a lead role, it's similar to Focus which was released in 2015 (305k OW). Clearly, the public wasn't that attracted to the HFR technology (aka 3D+) despite heavy promotion in the week before release.

The two major french releases of this week enter the top 5: Alice and the Mayor and J'irai où tu iras. But both are also slightly disappointing, doing less than the previous movies of each lead actor. Alice and the Mayor can aim for 700k while J'irai où tu iras will go for 500k.

Joker sold really well

~240/310k (including previews) OD likely. Still at incredible 4.7/5 Allociné and 8.4/10 Sens Critique. O/U Avengers Infinity War at this point?

Chambre 212 (C. Honoré's latest film) is also doing very well.

1.4 maybe with a normal multi.

However, it could (emphasis on could) also see a much better multi due to WOM. It isn't unusual for a film with ratings like this to have 8.5x + multis, but that OD is so big I'm having a hard time seeing it happen.

It has little competition (Vérité si je mens and Hors Normes probably won't affect it), and vacations next week, so legs should be great.

We'll know better once official OD numbers are released.

17k OD for La Fameuse Invasion des ours en Sicile. Very poor (which is a shame because the movie is great).

Hey, how is the number for Friday ? Can Joker still reach 1.3 million OS ?

No idea. We get hints on Wednesday,  but OD numbers released on Thursday, Weekend on Monday and full week on Wednesday are the only numbers released, if an insider or the distributor (for milestones) doesn't say anything.

1 357 118 admissions OW for Joker it seems!

Next week opens : Maleficient 2, La vérité si je mens ! Les débuts, Hustlers (renamed Queens here), Fahim, Angry Birds 2, Matthias & Maxime, Shaun the sheep 2.

Joker should retain #1, followed very closely by LVSJM! LD whose predecessor opened with 1,9M. This one has muted buzz and so-so response. It should still open around 1M.

Maleficient opened with 627k back in 2014. A Mary Poppins Returns-like (389k) performance feels about right here.

Fourth place should go to Matthias & Maxime, Xavier Dolan's latest. Even The life and death of John F. Donovan opened close to 200k.

AB2 and Shaun should battle for #5 while Queens/Hustlers likely will be a non factor.

In cine-director it said Joker already made 1.620.000 adm from 9-15 October.

So 263k ( € 2m ) admission Monday-Tuesday

Ahh it's estimate sorry....

Impressive though if in actual it can make that much from monday to tuesday
