Is France a leggy market for animated movie?

Pretty much, most animated movies can do 4x their OWeek.

10 LES ÉBLOUIS PYRAMIDE 62 738      (NEW) 146 430 62 738 1

An absolutely smashing start for Frozen II which is nearly 3 times bigger than the first the one. It will have shorter legs due to this start but 6M is definitely guaranteed, 8M is a new estimate. It will surely beat Endgame but won't beat TLK (which Disney France said it crossed 10M but it's doubted by the numbers).

The podium is completed by two french movies: Les Misérables (not based on the Victor Hugo novel but has ties to it), a suburbian police drama which will represent France at the next Oscars, did a very good opening nearing 1,000 admissions per print. Definitely tracking for 1.5M+. Joyeuse retraite, a french comedy about retirement, takes 3rd place and is in good position to reach 1M at the end of its career.

Positions 4 to 9 are all continuations, and thanks to low drops, both J'accuse and Le Mans 66 will reach 1M easily. La belle époque crossed it yesterday, Hors Normes will go over 2M at the beginning of next month, while Joker will try to reach 6M. Countdown also has a very decent drop for a horror movie. Les éblouis, a french drama, completes the top 10.

Note that we could have a record year as 6 movies could cross 6 million admissions in the same release year:

- Qu'est-ce qu'on a encore fait au bon dieu ? (Serial Bad Weddings 2) - 6.7M
- Avengers: Endgame - 6.8M
- The Lion King - 9.8M
- Joker - 6M

- Frozen 2 - 7M+
- Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - 7M+

InsideKino tweeted that too and I looked at JP-BO were it's still at 9,75M admissions. So who should be trusted, Disney or all other sources?

Disney is known for inflating numbers in France (Black Panther last year, reported 9th by Disney was actually 11th). A big jump is expected for this kind of movies due to theaters (and special events) not reporting during summer, but +250k admissions seems doubtful...and the fact they waited just until the DVD/Blu Ray release to say it is not helping either.

We'll have to wait until CNC's yearly report to know. It's an official source, so it's the only ones 100% reliable.

Opening Day - November 27 releases   Image

Knives Out comes out barely on top but is far ahead of its direct competition if we remove the admissions done in preview screenings (AP). However it's not really a great score either, it came out fourth of all movies yesterday behind last week's top 3 (Frozen II, Les Misérables, Joyeuse Retraite). Knives Out will surely get 500k overall and currently has good WOM but hitting a million will bear near impossible.

10 LA BELLE ÉPOQUE PATHÉ 85 543      (-45%) 765 112 1 149 968 1

Once again, Frozen II is the uncontested leader, adding 1.3M admissions over the five last days. Its total is now reaching 3.5M and the Christmas break didn't even start. The latest Disney animated feature is all-powerful on wednesdays, saturdays and sundays when children have next to no school. The top 3 stays the same, with Les Misérables keeping a great pace and Joyeuse Retraite which will both join the millionaire club.

The first newcomer is at #4: Knives Out. The latest "whodunit" film by Rian Johnson attracted some audience, even though the success is far from a Murder on the Orient Express. However, it has very good critics (4.1/5 viewer rating on Allociné, 7.3/10 on SensCritique) and it can limit its drops over the weeks.

Three other new releases are in the top 10: the american romcom Last Christmas, and two french dramas, Gloria Mundi and Chanson Douce, with scores around 100k admissions. Last Christmas can definitely benefit from the Christmas break as long as it can keep its 300 theaters. Note that a french comedy with famous actors, Toute ressemblance, failed to get into the top 10, with 69 625 admissions (351 prints). Another movie that'll join the long list of 2019 french comedy bombs.

Hi everyone, can frozen 2 compete with serial bad wedding 2 or Avengers endgame in France or 6M admissions is the most that it could reach ?

I'm not very good in predicting as I'm always lowballing to not overestimate. So if I say 6M you shouldn't consider that as being the high end :)

Frozen II in my opinion will reach 7M minimum and be #2 of the year, probably #3 depending on the success of Star Wars.

As the Christmas school break will start on December 20, and will run up to January 6, the movie should have great holds over the weeks.

Better start for Jumanji 2 than the first 1

Translation - Very good start (in mind) for #JumanjiNextLevel with 103369 entries for its 1st Day France in 676 rooms (including 20338 in AVP). It's better than the 1 with AVP (102547 entries in 2017) and much better than the 1 without AVP (83031 vs 65541 entries). cc @SonyPicturesFr @SPHEFR

Jumanji: The Next Level takes the lead, with a similar OD as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (but with less previews). The animated version of The Addams Family also gets a good score but it has 50% of previews in its OD. The french dramedy Le meilleur reste à venir does a lackluster score despite being screened in 600+ cinemas. Motherless Brooklyn has a slow start.

Top 10 Weekend December 4-10

10 LE MANS '66 (FORD V. FERRARI) FOX/DISNEY 75 513      (-48%) 481 165 936 770 4

Despite a much stronger start than the 2017 sequelboot, Jumanji: The Next Level is not able to topple Frozen II from the top spot. The latest Disney classic keeps a lead of over 150k admissions. The Addams Family completes the podium with an average start, and will reach 1M admissions easily thanks to the Christmas holidays. Note that the first three movies benefitted from a stronger Thursday than usual due to massive strikes in schools, and many children didn't have any classes that day.

Le meilleur reste à venir however is the disappointment of the week, starting only at #4 with less than 250k admissions in over 600 cinemas in its first 5 days. It could miss the million if it doesn't hold good over the weeks. Motherless Brooklyn starts at #9 in a much smaller release, but gets the 4th best average per cinema of the top 10.
