Memories of murder is certainly a very dark and gritty film, but I think that works in its favor to make it more memorable in some sense, and confers a visceral atmosphere of realism to it.

no your name on the list??I thought your name scored pretty well in SK.

And Dreamworks really dominates in the pre-Frozen era, but after Frozen's phenomenal craze, Disney seems to have upper hand

Yes you're right, it seems I copied the list from before Your Name's run. And you're correct in your analysis too. Frozen's run was a major outlier, not in the context of animated films but for foreign films in general.

Mixed in some of the more recent ones

1. The Wailing (2016): 99% fresh on RT if that means anything to you. Hardly any Korean film gets rated on RT. Caution though, the weirdness level of this film is off the charts.

2. Veteran (2015): Highlights very well the problem with "Chaboel" in Korean society and the acting is really good.

3. Miss Granny (2014): Comedy film about a granny who becomes young again after a photo shoot.

4. Luck-key (2016): Sleeper hit from 2016. I found it hilarious but not sure if the humor will strike home for a foreign audience.

5. The Good, the Bad and the weird (2008): Western themed film based in Korea. One of my all time faves.

Its definitely not as weird you made it out to be, horror can be way weirder. Really good movie it kept me engaged for its entire lengthy run time. The open ending also is great for debating.

Also watched Thirst. Did not like it at all. I hate watching hospitals, diseases and needles it makes me cringe so hard. Funny I have no problem watching the wailing which is probably worse.

Next up

1. JSA (Joint Security Area

2. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance

I LOVED The Wailing! It's very out-there but so so good. It's creepy and thrilling, and confusing, but that's what the movie wants us to feel. I also found Luck-key hilarious even though I'm not Korean.

What about The Battleship Island? Is it good? It's gonna be released here next week.

I guess it hits everyone differently. I found it super weird and being Korean I reckon I'm more acclimatized to the occult happenings in the film. I imagined for a foreigner it would be even more jarring but kudos to you if you weren't fazed by it :D

I thought it was just "okay" but otherwise it's been received quite poorly by many in Korea so I wouldn't really recommend it. It's a shame because normally I really like the director's style.

Me too. THE WAILING is one of the best horror films I have ever seen (and I've seen a lot of foreign and American ones).

It's a masterpiece and an achievement in South Korean cinema.

Wow, I'm really surprised about Battleship dropping below Despicable Me 3, especially after the record breaking OW. Guess the controversy hurt it. I wonder what it's total will be at the end of it's run. Heard it needs 7 mil admissions to be a success.
