It's funny, IMO these descriptions just indicate those reviewers/publications don't have that much experience with a lot of literary SF. It's not really a very weird story at all, and the visuals (while fun) aren't that crazy either.

Omg, let the spin commence  You have 1 week and a half to throw all the spin you want.

So yeah, these reviews are landing exactly where we expected them to based off the early reactions. I don't think it can dip below 70%... for now.

You sure about that? Both Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly really gave this the cold shoulder. Clearly it has its fans but it won't be without some very vocal detractors.

You know I should've know Valerian was cursed when Tele said he liked it.

I think it's about...8 reviews so far?  2/8 not liking it is still a 75% on the meter.  That'll be good enough for TOMATO LAW to works its magic.

Yeah, that's never a good way to measure how well a film will be received. When it's up to like 20-30 reviews, then we'll talk.

Looks like we have shit film that fanboys will rally behind and write countless online essays on why it's an "under appreciated masterpiece". Oh joy.

It seems like you've conveniently ignoring all the other good reviews.  They seem more mixed rather than all out negative at the moment.

B- from Indiewire

Just read Ehrlich's review and wondering how he came to a B- conclusion - he seems to dislike everything but the visuals and even then it's

Imagine if someone projected an entire decade’s worth of sci-fi space epics on the same screen, at the same time. Imagine you were in the audience for that event. Now imagine, for some insane reason, you decided to pre-game for the experience by eating an entire bag full of mushrooms that had been garnished with a fine layer of France’s best crystal meth.  That, more or less, is what it feels like to watch Luc Besson’s delirious “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” an independently financed $200 million intergalactic adventure so high on its own supply that it makes makes “Guardians of the Galaxy” look like an Ozu film (and not even one of those later Ozu films that he jazzed up with color).
