Star Trek 2 OS thread

What other big budget sci-fi are you comparing this to that this did better than? "Thoughtful" sci-fi  sounds like maybe the Matrix, but that blew this out of the water even though it was released 10 years earlier.

 

MATRIX is a "thoughtful" scifi but it is also a bad-ass kungfu/action movie.

The action in MATRIX is what sells it. So not really comparable.

 

I just never thought it would be so successful in China. That's all. China is a market where

GIJ2, EX2 and DH5 earn their biggest share of overseas market (meaning: undemanding audience)

STiD benifited from less competition, solid WOM and holidays in later run here. Plus big scale sci-fi films with (big) actions usually do well here. The audience like that kind of movie.

 

For examples:

 

Lockout (2012) did $5.5M here, bigger than France ($4M), as #1 OS market. the film only did 18M OS total. Its China/OS share nearly 30%.

 

Skyline (2010) did whopping $8.8M here, as #1 OS market while it only did 21M DOM and 45M OS total.  Its China/OS share nearly 20%.

 

John Carter (2012) did $41M here,  as #1 OS market and more than 55% that of DOM $73M. Its China/OS share nearly 20%.

 

Battleship (2012) did $48M here,  as #1 OS market and more than 70% that of DOM $65M. Its China/OS share  20%.

 

Battle: LA (2011) did $36M here,  as #1 OS market with a China/OS share nearly 28%.

 

Outside of these action packed sci-fi movies, traditional action films starring Nic Cage, Jason Statham, Stallone/Schwarzenegger, etc usually also do significently well here than in other places.

 

Smart action or sci-fi films like MI4, Inception, Apes, or mega disasters like 2012, WWZ (it surely will be a hit if released), or family sequel films with brand recognition like IA4, Smurfs 2, also perform great here.

 

West-sited fantasy films are generally weak here, except popular Potter and Rings.

 

Western films, like even Django Unchaind, and musicals, always flop here. Other genre films like American comedies would bomb here too if released.

The action in STID sells it just as much as The Matrix, it's just a different style of action.

I am tired of people acting as if STID is some big hit,  First it decreased domestically. People are now revising history and saying it was always expected to decrease domestically and only loonies were expecting it to increase. That is a flat out lie. Everybody, including the industry was  expecting it to open higher than it did and outgross the first. Nobody was expecting Star Trek 2 to finish behind Fast 6 domestically, let alone Oz the Great and Powerful. 

 

 

then they boast that it increased over the first worldwide. It will barely have a 100m increase despite 4 years of expansion and added 3D. Most of the increase came from China. In many countries including UK and Australia it had lower attendance than the first. 230m overseas is nothing special these days. Movies like John Carter, Resident Evil, GI Joe 2,  and even Battleship are able to reach that amount. With its 190m production budget not including marketing, STID is a mediocre performer overall, and I say that as a person that really liked the movie

STID might be a mild disappointment domestically, but there's no way you can spin the OS numbers as negative. It did fan-freaking-tastic for a ST film; doubling the previous record OS is no slouch, I don't care about 3D or expanding markets or anything else.

It's nowhere near double ST. (128 x 2 = 256, not 222.) With inflation, 3-D and expanding markets that's not notable.

You're nitpicking my statement. The only peoplewho think the OS gross is disappointing are those who've never followed the franchise until ST09.

Not compared to the franchise in general.

if you want to ignore 3D, expanding markets, strong WOM from the first and most of the gross coming from China, then that is fine, but you can't expect everyone to do so.

I just find it absurd that people think a film that sets a new franchise high-water mark overseas (substantially so) is a disappointment. It shows a lack of perspective.

it set that record thanks to extra help that it had. It was given a leg up. 

 

 

 

Fast 6 increased the same over Fast 5 the same amount Trek 2 over Trek 1. And Fast 6 came out only two years after Fast 5 and didn't have any 3D.

No it hasn't, the first three Fast films made less than the 2009 Star Trek and the fourth made less than STID.

 

Having a big percent increase OS is much easier when you start at a low point than when you have already made big numbers, which is why STID's numbers are not very impressive.
