In theory, you want HBO to have big successful shows, because that then lets them do smaller shows. Who knows how it will turn out in practice though

HBO has always had big successful shows, and their business model/prestige has kept them successful, even to the point where WBD rolls in HBO subscribers into their streaming operations to make those operations look profitable to shareholders.

I’m not against IP-based shows on HBO. Some of their biggest shows like Big Little Lies, The Last of Us, and most obviously Game of Thrones are based on well-known properties. It would just suck if there’s less space/money/resources in the future for shows like Barry, Succession, The White Lotus, etc. because they want to try to cash in on Harry Potter and DC (again) because their previous attempts to make them work in theaters flopped.

I really miss the HBO produced History based Miniseries..."Band of Brothers" "John Adams" (still the single best thing I have seen in movies or TV about the American Revolution) "The Pacific" etc.

Thank heaven Apple picked up "Masters of the Air" after HBO Passed on it despite the huge sucess of "Band Of Brothers" and "The Pacific" produced by the same Hanks/Spielberg company.

I would even bet that "The Sopranos" would be a hard sell for HBO nowdays since it does fit in  well what they consider their target audience.

John Adams was outstanding! I watch that in full once every couple years.

I agree. The best thing I have ever seen on the  American revolution.

Though "Band of Brothers" is tied with "Sopranos" as my all time favorite HBO series.

Arkham Asylum TV Series Not Moving Forward at Max (EXCLUSIVE)

https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/arkham-asylum-tv-series-not-moving-forward-max-antonio-campos-matt-reeves-james-gunn-1236060412/

Another dent in Matt Reeve's THE BATMAN's ambitions...  I'm telling you, folks, I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if THE BATMAN II actually gets filmed...  I think it's 50/50 on whether Pattinson's Bats just transitions to the new DCU...

The planned Arkham Asylum TV series is no longer moving forward at Max, Variety has learned.

As Variety exclusively reported in October 2022, Antonio Campos had come onboard to serve as writer and showrunner of the series, which was originally meant to be set within the world of Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman.” But according to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Campos’ version will not proceed. It is still possible, though, that a new project set within the infamous Gotham City asylum could be developed in the future, the individual noted.

Thus ends (at least for now) the show’s complicated path to the screen. It was originally announced in July 2020 with a series commitment, but at that time it was meant to focus on the inner workings of the Gotham PD as featured in “The Batman.” Terrence Winter was attached to write and executive produce, but he left the project in November 2020 due to creative differences. “Giri/Haji” creator Joe Barton was then brought in to write, but Warner Bros. ultimately parted ways with Barton as well.

Reeves would then say in an interview in 2022 that the Gotham PD show was not happening but that the story had “started to evolve” into what became the Arkham Asylum show, which he described as being like a “horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham.” Campos then joined, but not long after that, it was announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran would be taking over DC Studios and launching a rebooted film and television universe. In a series of social media posts in December 2023, Gunn said that the show was still in development and clarified that it was meant to be set within the new DCU rather than in the same world as “The Batman.”

I thought something fishy was going on with the Arkham show ever since Gunn said that it was going to be part of the DCU.

At this point, I think The Batman II might very well be it for the Reevesverse, assuming it too doesn’t get canned.

So every Reeves-verse series is dead, TB2 was moved by 1 year and Fraser's likely to be busy working on Villeneuve's next movie. I don't know but this is kinda suspicious.

Still have the Penguin series coming out in September, and this series was no longer Reeves-verse at this point.

Fuck Warmers then. Imbeciles. The Batman did fantastically well considering it was the umpteenth iteration of the IP. And it was actually really, really good.

It's almost as if developing TV series is *HARD* and that things implode/radically change in predevelopment all the time.

...

Not that I would know anything about that with the fandom I'm most associated with. *cough*

I mean, I actually have tremendous sympathy for Gunn (and by extension Reeves) regarding this situation.  Developing TV series in the best of times is challenging.  Overseeing a TV series that was greenlit under different studio heads and corporate bosses all the while the industry is transitioning away from Peak TV and cutting back on "prestige" TV shows/facing a more realistic reality when it comes to streaming?

I mean, why would any of this be a surprise?

To put it a different way, having a front row seat for everything that is going on over at LFL the last four-plus years has given me a much different perspective on all of this.  And a fair amount of latitude concerning the competency for folks involved in these sorts of decisions.

There have been a few factors that have personally made me question the future of the Matt Reeves Batman universe. This recent announcement is simply more fuel for the fire.

The Batman is definitely getting filmed lol. It’s literally free money they’re throwing away

The Reeves-verse is 100% dead, 1-2 more movies and that's it. If Penguin hadn't already started development, it would've been canned too.

Now I gotta be honest, I'm glad. Who cares about a Batman spinoff without Batman, these all sounded boring, even Penguin (just gonna be stock gangster drama with Batman references).

As if Zaslav hasn't been doing that, already...  We shall see, my friend, we shall see...

Even though I've commented about how positive I feel about Gunn's Superman, I was ultimately only interested in the Reeves-verse so this kind of sucks. I'm not signing up for another whole DC universe unless the projects just blow me away. I can only imagine how goofy a Gunn-verse Batman project would be.
