  1. Doesn't hold up quite as well but still it's impressive for the production design and, of course, Michael Keaton who was great as Batman (his Bruce Wayne wasn't great but it wasn't particularly a nuanced character either).
  2. Great teen comedy that never gets old. I also enjoyed listening to the commentary on the newest DVD release where they got many members of the cast together.

  4. I just caught season 2 on DVD and really enjoyed it. Yeah, it's contrived and like many shows geared toward younger viewers, it seems the parents, although featured here and there, are absent quite a bit of time. Still, I like the mystery element, something you don't get on a television series all too often. Glad I finished when I did, now I can get into the third season which is nice with basically nothing on except "reality" programming.

  7. I'd like to see him do a small suspense drama (a la Memento) or at the very least, something with a sub $100M budget, just to keep him grounded. IMO, if he continues to get $150M+ budgets, he could become complacent and thus his work will drop off in quality.

  11. If true, seems like a good number esp. since it's likely to go up from there...

  13. For the most part I enjoyed it. It's not terribly memorable but surprisingly despite what these guys did (ya know, spying on this woman), I still liked 'em both. I also liked that they didn't overdo it with the B-storyline with the GBG (Generic Bad Guy) and left the focus on the love triangle and quickly wrapped it up with an OK, albeit anti-climatic, finale. It's not something I'll revisit but it's light-hearted, the jokes worked fairly well and Reese Witherspoon shows she still has that girl next door charm. ***½/*****, (B, 6.8/10, 2.75/4)
  14. It has been tried and utterly failed. The reason I love it (and I suspect others as well) is the jokes are done deadpanned. I love the fact they took a screenplay and just rewrote with some jokes thrown in. And no story? Actually there is and in fact there's even character arc with Striker and his anxiety from the war which he overcomes to save the passengers. There's far more story here than in the lame ass ones lately...

  16. Released too early so it won't happen, but Liam Neeson for The Grey.

  18. Just watched this last night and for the most part, enjoyed it. Liam Neeson was fantastic as usual and the suspense and drama are well done and balanced throughout. I didn't mind the climax (or lack there of) as the movie is more about Ottway's journey than the fight between he and Alpha. Having said that, I can't imagine returning to this film anytime soon as this is something to admire than enjoy (similar feelings I have towards Requiem for a Dream, a film I haven't watched in nearly a decade). ***¾/*****, (B+, 7.7/10, 3.25/4)
  19. Not bad and fairly entertaining with decent to good visual effects, but the characters for the most are bland and the plot was paint-by-numbers. I only saw this on standard Blu-ray with no 3D but still was impressed mainly because a lot of times filmmakers will make obvious attempts to capitalize on 3D and while there were a couple shots where objects were flying at the screen, it wasn't imposing or too obvious that it took me out of the movie. Dwayne Johnson was a good replacement (or addition) though if he's not too careful, he might be typecast to fill in numerous already established franchises (see: Fast Five and the upcoming GI Joe sequel). Vanessa Hudgens looks hella fine and alright in the female lead while Josh Hutcherson, like Hudgens, serviceable in a role, like the rest, finds them primarily acting against a green screen. ***¼/*****, (B-, 6.7/10, 2.5/4)
  20. Serviceable if not forgettable, Gone is one of those movies that's not bad enough to hate nor good enough to praise. It falls in that sour spot where it's got sparks here and there only to be quashed by rediculous plot points and character actions. While Amanda Seyfried wasn't too bad and probably did her best with what she had, the rest of the cast was pretty much a waste mainly due to cardboard cutout characters including an inept and dumbass police force who haven't got a clue. The plot itself is also pretty safe void of any surprises or thrills (or sex for that matter) that it could are basically uncut (save for a couple curses) on TNT or TBS. That said, it's a breezy suspense-thriller that's certainly not going to highlight any part of your brain but for 90-minutes, it's an OK way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Seyfried at least makes it watchable even when the plot goes off the rails. **½/*****, (C, 5.2/10, 2/4)
