  1. The thing with superhero films is that the genre has such a well-defined archetype in Superman (both comics and cinema) and you cannot ask for a better kick-off/template for any genre than Donner's original.* And the good thing is, there has always been a franchise or two that have picked up slack when one started to trickle out. Once Superman started going to shit, Burton's Batman came to the rescue. Once Schumacher ruined Batman, Singer and Raimi almost immediately introduced X-Men and Spider-Man. Once those franchises started to burn out, Nolan's TDK trilogy hit its prime and the MCU started to roll. There have been troughs but the peaks have always been there. And the starting point of the genre as we know it today is still so well-regarded and respected that the goodwill trickles down to the entire genre when it comes to critic circles, more knowledgeable moviephiles and people working in the industry. What were the pioneer video game films? Mario Super Bros and Mortal Kombat? What are the pinnacles? Resident Evil and Tomb Raider? Already too much baggage. I agree that the genre, like any genre, needs interest from good filmmakers, but you can see why it is so hard to take it seriously as opposed to the CBM genre even if the latter has had its fair share of lows too. And let's not forget that Superman was already an iconic and inspiring figure well before 1978. What is the "Superman" equivalent of video games? Donkey Kong/Mario is the only one I think comes closest. How do you give that the amount of gravitas that Donner gave Superman? Maaybe in animation? It's a challenge for sure. *Yeah, I know the film had predecessors but those were so incredibly few and far in between that they are largely irrelevant to the way the genre is regarded. Or in the case of the 60's Batman movie, it's own little thing that perfectly fit the aesthetics of the very specific time that it was a product of.
  2. The Wall Street Journal review actually confirmed the most annoying and distracting discrepancy I picked up from the trailers. Apparently the movie doesn't quite know what it wants to be: a nostalgic celebration of a "Golden Era" or a more pragmatic look at the behind the scenes workings to build larger than life perceptions of real life people and events.
  3. Yup. It was officially announced on the eve of Cinderella (and Frozen Fever's) release in March 2015. By then, every WDAS project up till Gigantic was already in development.
  4. I think the screen time will be pretty evenly distributed among the core five, with Magik maybe getting the edge. Regarding Anya Taylor-Joy, she was asked about it a couple of months back and she didn't try denying it, interestingly enough, so chances look good. Source
  5. Can't blame anyone but Disney and their pimping of Cruella & puppy cuteness for Dalmatians' supposed undeserved cred over more appealing classics.
  6. Animatics video revealed on Comingsoon.net WE GOT LOCKHEED! DEMON BEAR! Anya-Taylor Joy and Maisie Williams rumor has resurfaced. And Nat Wolff being considered for Cannonball. The tone has been described as Stephen King meets John Hughes which sounds
  7. Tangled. MTR, Bolt and especially TPatF marked the crawl towards the light at the end of the tunnel, but it was Tangled that made WDAS truly rediscover its identity as a studio and show how incredibly potent it still could be both critically and BO-wise. Tangled was literally WDAS's "Healing Incantation" to recover from the period of serious misfires, uncertainties and identity crisis. Heal what has been hurt Change the Fates' design Save what has been lost Bring back what once was mine What once was mine
  8. Howl's is perfect and I'm glad to see it is one of the highest placing Ghiblis. Speaking of fantasy films with evocative themes, I'm guessing The Last Unicorn didn't make the cut.
  9. Ouch. He's still getting used to the BO analysis gig. You have to remember that he was initially a critic, awards predictor and commentator on the general movie business before his website shut down. I was really surprised when BOM offered him the job, because I don't remember him tracking on Rope of Silicon. I thought he would let his opinions mask his analysis but so far he's done a great job in keeping his articles objective (unlike a former BOM employee whose name escapes me who just couldn't shut up about how he personally felt about the movie in his articles). I don't blame BB for taking the job, especially at a time when he needed it. He's hardly the worst BOM-er and he's quick with the updates (unlike former BOM writers) so I'm cool with him.
  10. What RedX said. Shailene's scenes were cut because Marc Webb felt the introduction of Mary Jane took away from Gwen Stacy's story in TASM2. Nothing to do with being hired by a former employee. Clemmon's situation is like Evangeline Lilly and Paul Rudd's when Edgar Wright left Ant-Man.
  11. Yeah, I don't think she will leave, not of her own volition anyway. Unfortunately there aren't many female lead roles for POCs in blockbusters and she was aware of the social media noise surrounding her casting in the first place. Unlikely she'd decline it now just because Famuyiwa left.
  12. LMAO this is a different movie from the Rose Red one?!
  13. And recently he even admitted to interpreting Diana wrong and that from now on his depictions of the character would be heavily influenced by the George Perez and Phil Jimenez versions.
  14. To be fair, not many folks were exactly enthused with Famuyiwa getting the gig. And Famuyiwa in turn was an improvement over Seth-Grahaeme. There are chances the next person is even better. I really hope Kiersey Clemmons stays on though.
  15. LMAO @ the thought of Geoff Johns, whom the anti-SJW crowd has accused of being too PC himself, being the one to stall these ideas. 4chan seems to be made up of alt-right rumor generating bots apparently. *Black director leaves* bzzt *Must have been too PC*
  16. There was this obscure film called Chicago that won something called an Oscar? Idk for sure.
  17. Leo's down on his luck Captain Planet comes calling
