I haven't seen the first Star Trek but at the time everyone I knew who had seen it loved it. And for a lot of them that was the first one they'd seen. I've downloaded the first film to see what it's like.

No, his role was really underdeveloped. Which makes the decision to revolve the marketing around him that much more foolish.
