Indian Box Office Thread | Jawan overtakes Pathaan, becomes highest grossing Indian movie of 2023

Recommended Posts

Avengers - Infinity War has taken a bumper opening of 70-75% and this is the highest occupancy seen in a long time. It is also the first time that a Hollywood release has taken a bumper opening. There have been some excellent openers like Spiderman in 2007 and Fast & Furious 7 in 2015 but nothing like this has been before.

Hollywood studios dont allow release on the UFO and Qube formats which limits their screens counts but this also allows the film to get higher occupancy especially if the craze is like it is for Avengers - Infinity War. It is the second highest screen count for Hollywood after Fast & Furious 7 which was allowed on UFO and Qube format.

The film could have gone to 4000 screens or more if it was able to release on all formats but it will have to settle for half that but it does have the highest ATP (Average Ticket Price) of all time. The takes the capacity to a huge level despite only 2000 screens and the film does have a chance to have the highest opening day of the year though a lot will depend on how far the collections in the South go. The top openings in terms of occupancy in 2018 are as follows.

1. Avengers - Infinity War - 70% (2000 screens)

2. Baaghi 2 - 57.5% (3500 screens)

3. Padmaavat - 42.5% (3750 screens)

4. Black Panther - 32.5% (1000 screens)

5. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety - 27.5% (1650 screens)

The next best is Pad Man with a little over 20% opening while all the other releases this year be it Hindi films or Hollywood releases are 20% or under.

If I'm doing the math correctly then that's about $4.4 million USD in advanced sales. I see that Baahubali 2 did about $45 million USD opening weekend and about $110 million USD overall. Do you think it's possible to get half of that (roughly 360 crore) total?

Bahubali 2 was like a event movie. BB2 is the highest grossing in every single state of India (Except Kerala).

BB2 was rage right from cities to villages which is not the case with AIW. Its a tough nut to crack.

AIW cannot replicate the same but it has potential to oust TJB at Max.

What's OD looking like?

EDIT: BOI saying 28-30 net.

Wow 😮 If true then that is massive!!! It will be more than double the 2nd biggest hollywood OD and higher than most Bollywood movies despite being on nearly half the screens

In USD?

Haha nah we wish though. But 30 is about 4.5m usd. Also note that these are nett figures, the actual gross figures will be higher obviously

Avengers - Infinity War has taken the highest opening day for a Hollywood release by a margin which was always a certainty and has also taken the highest opening day of the year beating the 25 crore nett of Baaghi 2. The early estimate for the film is around 28-29 crore nett but it could touch 30 crore nett depending on the final figures in the morning from South and Mumbai.

There has been no Hollywood film that has even reached 15 crore nett before this film so its almost double their best in India. The collections have also come on just 2000 screens whereas films like Baaghi 2 and Padmaavat were released on 3500 screens.

Despite the 2000 screens, the capacity was built at especially at multiplexes with ATP's (Average Ticket Prices which were 30% higher than Baaghi 2.

The opening numbers are simply crazy and its funny to see the Hindi film industry and trade especailly later celebrating and rejoicing when in reality its the biggest kick in teeth to the Hindi film industry ever. Only in this industry a kick in the teeth will be celebrated. There was Bahubali - The Conclusion last year but that was still an Indian film at least.

There is the huge Hindi film audience which is just starved for entertainment week in week out. There may be a few festival event films which interest them and maybe the odd one here and there which means they will look elsewhere. Hollywood was getting the upper hand in many clashes with Hindi films but this is another level and it has to remembered its just 2000 screens (if the film was allowed to released on UFO and Qube format then we could even be talking about 40 crore nett) and it was not a holiday.

This is not to say if the Hindi industry had universal Hindi films every fortnight that Avengers - Infinity War would not have opened big. It would have but probably not this big that it in real value it practically takes out every other film. After this beating from Hollywood we will deliver films like 102 Not Out, Raazi and Veere Di Wedding, and yes there is Omerta too for good luck. Its like they are making films for India and only god knows who the majority of Hindi films are made for.

The film is on course for the biggest weekend of the year also though the collections will not grow that much as the film is already recording very high occupancy.

6.025m USD OD for IW in India! More than double the previous record for a hollywood movie :ohmygod:

It did half of what Civil War did in its entire run in a single day.

IW OD is even more astounding due to the fact that

1) It opened on half the screens that local movies do

2) it opened during a normal non holiday period whereas the big movies usually vie for the big holiday dates

3) Opened during IPL where millions will be watching the game everyday

Never seen anything like this in India ... it's even bigger than Baahubali 2 if we take seating capacity into consideration. Don't understand why it didn't release on more screens here ... could have broken OD record. Also with more screens it had more room to grow over weekend especially with the kind of WOM it has.

I cant find the article but I read in it that the reason why IW and most other Hollywood movies release in fewer theatres is due to the type of screens/projectors/etc that the theatres are equipped with. I believe Hwld studios do not screen in non digital screens which is why many theatres in towns and small cities and some (like old single screens theatres) in big cities. This explains the low screen count

It was not released in UFO and Qube formats to avoid piracy.

Still, it is a phenomenal number. The reported number is 31.30 crore nett / 40.13 crore gross ($6M+).

Saturday is as crazy as friday and the number should be in the same region.

It’s also the 2nd highest OD in India all time if I am not wrong. It outdid every singlw Bollywood movie which is simply crazy.

No. It is in 8th position (in terms of nett) and 10th/11th position, tied with Dangal (in terms of gross)

Why cant indian media stick to one of nett or gross I can never understand. Sometime they use nett sometime gross but hardly ever specify.

The wom is good?

WOM is incredible. IMAX screens in my city are completely sold out for today, almost sold out for tomorrow as well (12 out of 16 sell out and rest are all 90%+ sold out).

Even the IMAX shows listed for Mon-Tue-wed are on their way to complete sell outs

One of the cinemas in my city has 40 shows listed for IW tomorrow across various formats. Thats the most I have ever seen for a movie.

4DX is completely sold out, IMAX is near complete sell out. Surprisingly 2d has sold the least. Indians still love PLF’s and 3d
