The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug OS Thread

lol this post from Fishnets on IMDB

Hey WB, if marketing was about Smaug and not Elves in love, boxoffice...would have been like China opening EVERYWHERE including US! Face it! The only reasonable explanation why DOS's China boxoffice is so staggeringly different from boxoffice in other countries is that Smaug was front and center of the marketing. Remember that badass poster of him? Yeah, that puts butts in seats, not Lego-uriel posing with their bows and arrows like they are attending Hunger Games cosplay. Everywhere else, the focus was on Legolas and Tauriel making goo-goo eyes and their CGI versions doing some lame duet fighting. Are you even aware how stupid that was? Legolas was popular with teen girls 10 years ago. Those girls grew up and moved onto Edward and Jacob! So no wonder that Legolas-fuelled marketing was met with collective meh and shrug. Plus, didn't you see how bad he looked, all pudgy and with those creepy blue contacts? Yeah, turn-off right there. And who the beep is Tauriel? She looked like Poor Man's Katniss . Who needs a hamburger when steak is playing next door? And who do you think wants to watch a lame romance in a dragon movie???? What were you thinking? Seriously, this is a marketing beep-up of the century!

I actually kind of agree with her..

AUJ and STID would join it as the marketing beep ups of the century.

(AUJ has the december opening record but it's ow(day 1,2,3) is smaller than TT's and RotK's adjusted ow(day 3,4,5) despite having 3D. Also less than I am Legend and same as Narnia adjusted despite 3D.)

DoFP could give them a run for their money.

boo Japan exchange rate  :(

Corpse said 700-750M yen for Thor2 but the worse thing is exchange rate has depreciated significantly since the 1st one and so overall gross is almost the same.

It will also affect DOS as yen has depreciated over 20% since the 1st one.

From an initial US $18.7 million take in China, An Unexpected Journey went on to total $49.7 million last year. A similar result would see The Desolation of Smaug earn almost $90 million.

Worldwide box office heading for $1 billion?

The total box office outside of North America for The Desolation of Smaug now sits at $637.1 million, and the film is yet to open in Japan — the world’s third-largest cinema market by value.

So far, The Desolation of Smaug has earned US $893 million worldwide, with US $256.6 million coming from North America.

A good result in China could push the worldwide box office past $960 million, but if Japan’s taste for Middle-earth has trulyfallen away, then The Desolation of Smaug might fall just shy of the magic $1 billion mark.http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2014/02/27/87218-box-office-numbers-show-the-middle-kingdom-loves-middle-earth/

DoS is 106m away from 1b ww. Or 105m considering it will make 1m more domestic post the dollar theater bump.

It had a 32.7m weekend in China. I guess it can add 40m more there.

That would leave 65m to get from Japan.

AUJ made 20m there so 25-30m seems the high-end considering the currency has depreciated.

So looking at 960-965m ww.

Its not any more the world's third largest cinema market. In 2013 U.k defeated it and in 2014 France may also defeated it.Then in 2015 and beyond Russia,India,Brazil.

from the Japan thread

Corpse

Weekend Ranking [03/01-02]

01 (--) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Bros.) DEBUT

>The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug debuted to ¥313,266,250 ($3.1 million) with 244,577 admissions over the weekend on 681 screens.

The opening is +42% better (+15% in USD) than An Unexpected Journey in gross and a very impressive +67% boost in admissions thanks to the discount Saturday. Also of note, is that this one opened on almost 200 less screens than the first film, so the opening is moreso impressive. It won't remain ahead of the first film by this much since it opened on a discount weekend and having Spring Break isn't as good as New Year, but it should have little problem out-grossing the first film and will probably exceed the ¥2 billion ($20 million) mark.

This is still a FAR behind the Lord of the Ring films, but it's a good improvement over the first Hobbit release.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug grossed a further $5.8m (Rmb 25.1m) for $679.7m and has amassed $66.5m in China (Rmb 404m), surpassing by some margin the $50.7m (Rmb 316m) final gross of the first Hobbit film. The Japanese running total has reached $7.6m (¥777.4m) and is tracking 23% ahead of the original by the same stage.

700 is a pretty good milestone
