I think it's telling that none of these movies were released as "Part One." SPIDER-VERSE dropped it from the title and re-titled the sequel. DUNE didn't have Part One anywhere in its marketing materials - trailers, posters - and only included it on the title card at the beginning. (And I heard that was a late addition because test audiences got mad at the cliffhanger without it)

Yeah, studios clearly are looking at box office results and marketing that implies its a negative even if it's not the worst thing in the world. Neither Dune nor Infinity War really denied there would be a sequel but both on their own terms tried to sell the film as a self-contained story (I don't think Disney gets enough credit for being able to sell both Infinity War and Endgame as the big final capstone to the MCU without suffering any blowback).

That they've made this two films to me seems like they want to franchise this as much as they possibly can. Luckily for them it appears that confidence wasn't misplaced if the early buzz from the Super Bowl ad is an indication.

Problem I have, is having seen the stage show, I don't get how they can stretch it into two films without major league padding.
