2014 Academy Awards: The Official Thread (ALL NOMINEES IN THE FIRST POST)

No but I think there are certain directors who are jealous of his popularity. It's definitely not the entire Academy though or he wouldn't be graced with so many Oscar-winning actors and technical workers on every single film he makes.

They still ignore him as a director.

Gravity is scientifically ridiculous and features some dubious dialogue, it wasn't worthy of BP.

A movie isn't completely scientifically accurate?! What spore of madness is this?!!

I'm a science fiction afficionado and I don't think rewarding a scifi movie for the sake of rewarding a scifi movie is the answer. The Academy should vote for the best movie, period, the genre notwithstanding, that's how scifi should be treated, as equal to any other kind of genre. And Gravity was treated as equal.

For god sake, do I remind you Cuaron won best director Oscar for a scifi movie? Why do people always see the half-empty bottle and not the half-full part?!

The fact that Gravity swept most of the awards and that it literally was an experience shows that it truly deserved Best Picture because it was that...the best picture of the year. You seem to be opposed to Gravity winning Best Picture not because it wasn't but because it won other awards.

The academy is jealous of Nolan's skills as a filmmaking.

No I think he is so young so yep they rob him sometimes with nominations or he supports someone the old alumni doesnt like perhaps.

Nolan is not the best director Fancy so I dont think they would be jealous of him. James is far better at movie making  and from multiple genres.. So was old Speilberg. Nolan is one of the best out there though.. I just think they dont like giving awards to young directors.(Some sort of wacked sentiment that they havent earned their wings or not part of the clink yet)

Im shocked because they arent exactly besties with Cameron but respect his greatness so much  that he will still earn  awards all over the world.

Some of the inaccuracies were kinda glaring though, like seeing space debree coming at you at 22,000 mph.  I don't think it should've won for other reasons though.

No, I don't mind Gravity didn't win because my "scifi genre fanboyism" aside (I really liked Gravity and its amazing direction), I think 12YAS was a better movie as a whole. Period.

The directors' branch controls the nominations. That's how you end up with Inception and TDK getting 8 nominations but no Director nomination. Like I said, I think some of his fellow directors are jealous of his popularity. Spielberg dealt with similar resentment early in his career.

I thought the split was great: GRAVITY owes everything to Cuaron and his insane vision and dedication, and 12 YEARS is a worthy winner and it's high time a film about slavery won (to say nothing about a film about slavery starring and directed by black people). Bravo. There were no surprises, but on the whole it was a satisfying group of overall winners.

Yeah but by his age Spielberg had already had several nominations.

Shame about Nolan. Hopefully Interstellar changes that (doubt it will).

It kinda says something about how dull these Oscars were that the biggest surprises of the night were in Best Documentary and Best Animated Short Film.
