ITALY (Botteghino): 'Kung Fu Panda 4' stronger than predecessor

Recommended Posts

After yesterday's gross it has now passed the total of "The Avengers" and "Spider Man 3", since things are getting pretty interesting I'll post the top 10:

Avengers: Endgame (2019) - €30.28 million

Joker (2019) - €29.65 million

Spider-Man (2002) - €19.26 million

Spider-Man 2 (2004) - €18.98 million

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) - €18.78 million

Spiderman: No Way Home (2021) - €18.34 million

Spider-Man 3 (2007) - €18.05 million

The Avengers (2012) - €18.01 million million

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) - €16.57 million

Iron Man 3 (2013) - €16.09 million

Remember that to have the gross in dollars you have do add about 10/15% to the total (and something more for Spider Man 3)

IW       vs.    EG     vs.    NWH [2nd Week]    vs. TFA [After 2nd Week]

Mon  - 243k    vs.   248k    vs.    730k   (-42%)                vs. 0.992  (-48%)

Tue   -  239k    vs.   269k    vs.    583k   (-19%)                vs. 0.874

Wed  -  206k    vs.   269k    vs.    532k   (-8.7%)               vs. 0.795

Thu   -  156k    vs.   153k    vs.                                          vs. 0.427

It's hold is good.

Almost comparable to TFA's, If It really held as well as TFA (even if gross is low) -  then it will be 21-22m by end of 1st week of January~

Dang Joker/Endgame did really good for a comic book movie

Yeah, Joker in particular had incredible legs and word of mouth. In its second week it had a 50% increase, and in the third one it grossed as much as the first 😲

No Way Home passed Infinity War after 14 days of release, and in a couple of days it will pass it also in admissions

If we used the admissions as our main ranking (as they do in France, South Korea, Germany etc) No Way Home (which should finish at about 3 million) wouldn't be able to reach the top 5. In addition to Endgame and Joker it would also be below the first 2 Spider Man and probably also the first Superman and a couple of Batman movies

It has now passed Spider Man 2 (despite selling 1M fewer tickets), and tomorrow it's Spider Man's turn

I have never thought I'd see another Spider Man movie get past them, especially after the disappointing result of Far From Home

In the meantime La befana 2 (the first made 7 million) debuts with only 30k on the first day, I almost can't believe that all the December releases apart from Spider Man were a complete disaster...

And those of January (Matrix, Me Contro Te 3, Belli Ciao, The King's Man) certainly won't do better

House of Gucci still number two means the new releases just bombed.

La Befana #s is so bad, #7 overall...just wow.

West Side Story #9 not even 300k euros. Diabolik was heavily promoted and it's just under 2 million with a reported budget without marketing of 10 million. Absolutely shocking. Spiderman's performance is very special as in the rest of the world.

IIRC 1st 7 days of year are bigger than XMAS week right?

No.. At least TFA says so - It also had perfect week start as Friday fell on 25th and next Friday fell on 1st January.

It made 8.31m from 25th to 31st, then 3.51m from 1st to 7th.

Now that the year is over let's take a look at the top 10 of 2021:

No Way Home €19.4M
Eternals €8.4M
No Time to Die €8M
Dune €7.3M
Venom 2 €7.1M
Me contro Te 2 €5.1M
Fast & Furious 9 €4.8M
Black Widow €4.7M
Encanto €4.5M
Shang-Chi €3.8M

Obviously the films released in November and December will continue to gross something also in the coming weeks, for example Spider Man should reach the 22/23 millions and House of Gucci should pass Shang-Chi and gross more than 4M

Overall the results were really disastrous, basically 90% of the films underperformed and the comparison with 2019 is simply embarassing: 17 films over the 10 million euros (and 3 over 30M) vs only one this year...

Maybe Italian need some local blockbuster to drive them back to cinema.

Probably, for the moment however all those who have tried have failed miserably

Diabolik is the adaptation of one of the 3 most famous and appreciated characters of Italian comics and my forecast was over 10 million euros, and instead it will end up at around 2/3 million.

Then there was the classic Christmas movie which in the past had no problem exceeding 15/20 million, and this time it just grossed 2 million

Now let's see how the comedy of Pio and Amedeo will do, since they are trying to imitate Checco Zalone also with the release date. With the small difference that they make absolutely no one laugh...
