You was expecting it to be 2 hours of silly camp?

based on Greta Gerwig previous films, I would be shocked if this was nothing but a silly comedy

If this is anything like her other films, there will defiantly be more serious and dramatic moments in this movie

For whatever reason, it’s clear that WB is actively impeding many movie critics’ ability either to see Barbie and/or to see it in timely fashion. And that’s unusual, and it’s pissing a lot of critics off.

Are you accusing Warner Bros. of incompetence? How dare you. WB has clearly been the most stable and successful decision makers in the industry over the past half decade.

Critics are spoiled and many give passes to big movies cause they want to be invited to more advance screenings. So WB actually going against that by creating a situation where critics have to give up one advance screening to see the other is pretty based in my book.

"Spoiled" it's their job, they're not kicking back munching popcorn, they're furiously compiling notes.

Does their job inherently require that they see a movie early in a private screening? Don't most restaurant critics go to an open restaurant and pay for the food (and then write it off/get reimbursed)?

They need the clicks to put food on the table. Early review generally gets them more clicks than late review.

No but obviously it's mutually beneficial for both critics and studios or else that wouldn't happen, but that's beside the point, going to see a movie early is not a treat for them, they're going to work.

This is literally what it is though. I think the executives in charge at WB are absolute morons, there have been so many shitty decisions that studio has made. They really shit the bed with The Flash and with HBO Max and with TCM and with Nolan and at this point, if the studio gets bought by Amazon, it will make perfect sense. They don't know what they are doing.

They basically got really lucky with this Barbie movie, the buzz for it was super organic. And as for the insane promo? A lot of it is organized by MATTEL not even by WB. Barbie is saving that dumpster fire of a studio's neck right now.

Who knows how the reviews will shake out, but even if they are good, the studio is doing nothing but pissing critics off with their scheduling which is a dumb move. They have been making dumb moves for the last five years.

Not people praising a big studio for messing up with critics lives lol

These freelancers write for living, watching those movies is what put food in their tables

And yes they have to watch earlier because studios is the ones who benefits the most from it to create earlier hype so their pieces have lower value if it’s published too late

Exactly! It is not just critics being whiny, this is their bread and butter. It is their job, it is how they pay their bills.

I mean, sure it's work. But again, seeing it early in a private screening is not something that should be seen as normal imo. Yes, it's mutually beneficial... sometimes! If the film needs the good press! But Barbie clearly doesn't.

It's just been the standard that they allow these critic screenings, because typically they help with the hype. But honestly for these blockbusters now, I don't see a point anymore. The movie is going to sink or swim due to the marketing and how the movie actually looks. GOTG3 didn't have great legs/WOM because early critics reviews said so.
