Weekend #'s FIOS: 48.2, EOT: 29.1

Nobody said audiences are rational.

Tom Cruise has done quite a few movies over the past couple years and it dilutes his brand. Making two sci fi films within a year does not help, especially when the quality has been hit and miss comparatively to his glory years.

it's not like his recent films have been panned or anything. Far from it

Blame WB their marketing sucked fish balls. There was nothing that screamed awesome. The trailer was just heh . I'll wait for It to premiere on HBO

The trailers were good. And the movie was awesome. See it, then REPEAT.

That would be a mistake, it's a great movie. Also, the weekend numbers thread title should be:The fault in our box office

I watched Oblivion last weekend.I found the climax incredibly dark.Anyone have any ideas about the movie's symbolism?I'm pretty sure the movie has alot to say about women, but I'm not sure what.

It says that as Tom Cruise gets older,  the women stay the same age.

I did not get that EoT would be funny from the promos. They were all serious. That seems to have been one of the problems. Haven't seen the movie but if it's funny like members here have mentioned, then that angle should have been promoted. Unless it's funny in a specific context that the promos would fail to capture.

No, but they're not exactly great either. Movies like Rock of Ages and Jack Reacher/Oblivion to a lesser extent do not help him, especially when they're bunched up in a 2 year span. They wouldn't necessarily hurt him either, but audiences are simply rejecting Cruise in the action hero role, partly because of him, partly because they're decent at best, and partly because it's too much

People can blame WB all they want, but it's not just marketing. It's symptomatic of a deeper issue in my opinion. A stigma for Cruise.

Do you think audiences are justified for reacting that way?Seems like it was short sighted to ignore EoT just because it's another Tom Cruise sci-fi flick.

The mainstream audience often overlooks quality for silly reasons.But...such is the box office.
