Discussion: Shrek 2 will never be beaten

Recommended Posts

$441m initial run.

$579m adjusted run.

$600m+ 3D adjusted run.

Closest competitors in recent years (or the only other films to make $400m+ ever)

Toy Story 3, Pixar, years and years of goodwill and fan accumulation, superb reviews, finale = FAIL

Frozen, WDAS, comeback, princess, musical, phenomenon, cultural zeitgeist, hit song & OST = FAIL

Animation just does not have the pulling power for people (and there are a lot) who lump it into "kids films", simply because it is the main tool used in cartoon programming. Narrow-mindedness is a state of mind that is extremely difficult to break. Just ask...well, all of us are narrow-minded about something, quite unfortunately. American politics...another topic. World politics...another topic. Religion...HOLY...maybe impossible to discuss lol.

So, with this prefacing, anyone thinks Shrek 2 will fall?

I think something will eventually beat Shrek 2's unadjusted gross due to inflation. Whether it will be Finding Dory or something else to break it, something will do it at some point. However, I do think that Shrek 2's admissions will never be beaten (by an animated film).

Unadjusting, inflation will make it one day. IMHO, Finding Dory is the first serious contender.

Adjusting, I do not see it. Let's remember that its OW adjusts to 140 million (without 3D) and its second weekend (Memorial Day) adjusts to 94 million 3-day/125 million 4-day. We are talking about a movie that, excepting OW, had a similar or even higher run than Avengers, for instance.

Adjusted it's not possible imo. Being a beautifully rendered animation was itself a quality at par with story, direction ,etc. in those days. Now that's a given and itself does not pull audiences.

I don't think you should ever say something is not possible, there could be another animation revolution similar to CGI in the future and something beats Shrek 2.  Or we could have a box office admission boom for whatever reason.  Or one animation might simply strike gold with the audience and transcend perceived limits.

We don't know, but I am going to assume one day something will beat Shrek 2 unadjusted.

Also remember this, The Lion King has technically already beaten Shrek 2 unadjusted.

I don't think it's impossible, but it'll be something that we never see coming.

Pretty much. It will also probably take a bit of a change in the animation industry to lighten the number of releases. Plus there needs to be something about the film that says to audiences that everyone needs to see it.

Since Shrek 2, has only Avatar matched it in admissions? It's entirely possible that we don't see another movie reach that admission level again, animation or no.

If toy story 3 couldnt do it dory has no shot

Why? Finding Nemo is more popular than either of the first two Toy Stories, and the DVD sales, Finding nemo is on of the most beloved films of all time, people are going to turn up for the sequel.

What you're forgetting is, Dory isn't a natural fit for a sequel. While people were excited when it was announced, there was never any palpable desire for it. Compare that with Toy Story 3, where every couple of years you'd hear rumblings of it until it finally happened, and when it did, the story felt like a natural progression instead of being there for the sake of it.

And Shrek 2 wasn't what Finding Dory is?
