Minimum RT score for you to watch upcoming movies

Personally, unless everyone says that a movie is diabolically bad, not just critics, I won't go see it. In essence, critical dislike won't really stop me from seeing a film, but strong critical scores won't always make me want to see something if it's just not that interesting to me. I follow a lot of users on here (Blank, Gopher, Boner Omega, Jake Gittes, Telemachos, etc.) more than them, IMO.

I think more importantly for me, critical praise means a film will invariably have a very lively debate about its merits. Even if I may not like it, it's worth seeing just to join the discussion. It's no fun to pay to see a shitty film and end up hating it just like everyone else.

 

Plus, it's a way to maintain an open mind. I probably wouldn't be caught dead seeing a film about a deranged ballerina if critics didn't slobber over it (I still think it's overpraised, but it certainly was unique)

I don't want to sound like I'm taking it personally, but I just don't understand this mentality that we "real" moviegoers are somehow "better" than critics at deciding what films are good. There are certainly users here that write really thoughtful, intelligent reviews, but I'd venture to guess I agree/disagree with Gopher and Tele at about the same rate I do RT critics.

This is something I just came up with and think it could be fun. With major upcoming movies, what minimum rotten tomatoes score would they need for you to decide to watch them in theaters? I don't fully agree with RT's ratings but the beauty of this is you can adjust every movie's minimum RT score to your tastes, which makes it interesting. For example movies you maybe didn't care about could capture your attention with a really high RT score, or movies you were already anticipating could need a really low score to make you not see them.

RT scores are by no means the be-all and end-all, but I do pay attention to them and I do prefer a fresh-rating. For horror movies my bar is set a lot lower tho.

If a movie looks interesting and I've decided to see it already, I will want to see it but a low score can be discouraging, (like maybe below 30% for a movie that looks interesting would be discouraging).

 

If a movie didn't initially capture my interest, a high score maybe 70% or higher *might* make me want to see it but not necessarily.  Sometimes after seeing a high review if the movie still sounds boring I might want to see it still.  Sometimes, if the critics rating is high but audience rating is a lot lower e.g., 90% critic rating, but only 60 or 70% audience rating, it's more discouraging.  I like to watch movies for enjoyment and some of these movies are rated well by critics but maybe "boring" or not as enjoyable.

 

I would still see a movie with low critics rating but high audience rating.

I've never used RT as any barometer on if I will see a film. 

I very capable of making up my own mind. This is coming from someone who sees at least 30 movies a year theatrically so I don't need the "movies cost money" argument, I've heard it. 

 

I long ago decided that as a rule I will not see comedies and horror films at full matinee ($9) or evening ($12) prices as those film do not lose any value on DVD on my large flat screen at home. Same goes for the artsy flair and biopic pics, take Jersey Boys or 100 Foot Journey as recent examples. Now I'll use a freebie coupon to see them or make an occasional exception but it's rare. 

 

Films like Into the Storm or The Pyramid also scream DDVD film that fluked it's way into a big screen debut. Those I rule out as well despite having the fx/action quotient it's usually obvious from the trailer the script is weak and cast is TV stars trying to break out(which is hit or miss sometimes). 

 

Some critic, or group of critics, are not seeing movies for all the same reasons I am.

They are their own clique and have their own biases. TMNT got hated on cause Bay is involved but it's not a bad film.

 

Just know what you like, what your own criteria and reasons are for seeing movies. Then review a trailer and go...or don't.

When it comes to critics, I usually only take their opinions in to account if it's either universal acclaim or derision. And even then it doesn't always sway me. I still wanted to see Grown Ups 2, and didn't want to watch Nebraska.

For the most part though it's a gut feeling that decides whether or not I see a film, as well as how much time I have.

I normally follow Metacritic general bands.

 

If a movie is RED there, that's pretty damn bad and 90% of the time the movie is crap too.

 

Anything yellow above (40 or 41 I think) I will give it a shot if I wanted to see it anyway.

 

RT scores have no real clue as to whether or not it's truly bad/good.

Considering my history with critcs, I'd say the lower the score the bigger the chances of me liking a movie
