I think Sony overestimated the appeal of TGWTDT but it did do $100m domestic but at $90m, it was expensive,think MGM who were co-financier and distributor made a small loss on it.

 

They also overestimated how much the books popularity will last. By the time the movie came out, Millenium trilogy was already past its peak. I'm pretty sure a few months after TGWTDT got released, the book series had already dissapeared from public consciousness.

It probably needs to make about 250 worldwide to break even.

Why? The production budget was $70 million and they could possibly have spent that much in advertising. There were almost no commercials.
