There was nothing they could do with the marketing. The movie was marketed the way it exactly was

After MJ1, I think studious from here on out will avoid using part 1 in movie titles, even when splitting a book in half.

Agreed—heck, The Hobbit was adapted into 3 movies (which REALLY could have just been one movie since it's just one book, maybe 2 movies) and there was no Part 1, 2, or 3 in the titles, just their own subtitle.
