Fifty Shades Darker | February 10th, 2017 | First Trailer on Page 13

Credit to Universal for staying strong when all those reports about salary demands were coming out, saying Dornan and Johnson wanted Twilight-esque raises. They probably looked at the legs and knew the second was likely to go down.

I feel like Universal definitely fumbled by waiting an extra year. It still would have dropped from the first film in 2016 (and it would have been overshadowed quite decisively by Deadpool had it stuck to President's Day weekend, which it undoubtedly would have), but not as heavily as it will now. It doesn't feel like anywhere near the buzzy event the first one was, even despite the advertising blitz.

Isn't the third movie already made? lol. If this one sees a significant drop-off (likely) and a sub-20% score on RT (probably even more likely), I feel like we'll be getting a taste of how the last Divergent movie would've performed had it been made before the third bombed and made it impossible to move forward with the final one.

Can we remember that Fifty Shades made 14x it's budget WW? Of course Darker is going to drop, and then Freed is going to drop even more, but that's still a lot of money for Universal.

Universal already payed the budget and marketing expenses of Darker and Freed with Grey's money. From here until the end it will be all profit and zero concerns.

I doubt it was a grand plan, it took a while for them to pick a screenwriter who would placate EL James (her husband) and a director who read about her on-set antics during the first movie yet still wanted to sign up. I bet they didn't want to write/film all three at once in order to gauge audience response but it left them in a bind when everyone behind the scenes just couldn't nicely play together for another year or two.

It was actually reported that Darker and Freed(the third movie) were both filming at the same time each with a budget of 20M for a total of 40M, which is the same budget for the first one. Check a few pages back when we were talking about it.

If those reports are true then they were really smart with budgeting this and there's no way in hell they don't make a healthy profit no matter how much the sequels drop.

Very smart with the budgeting of this. Hugely profitable no matter what.

Why not? Filming in Canada, back to back so they can reuse sets, cheap actors, no special effects

The actors may not be getting huge big pay rises but it's still a pay rise. This one has set pieces like a helicopter crash and a car chase; it also has a masquerade ball with hundreds of extras. Song licencing is stupidly expensive too; it costs more to licence one song than it does to record an entire score.

Fair play if they managed it though.

There was some filming in France, when that Bastille Day attack happened, the studio released a statement that the cast/crew hadn't been harmed. Not sure if it was for this movie or the next one or both. More updated budget info will be released when the movie comes out this week.

LOL, this is not another Divergent, this has a fanbase.

No more than Sex and the City did, and we saw how that movie's sequel fared. ;)

Although a similar drop to Sex and the City 2 would push this just over $100M, so...

The small difference is that 50S is a complete beast OS, and OS audiences are always more friendly to sequels than USA, I doubt it will drop to under $300m OS with both movies, this is becoming an OS franchise just like Pirates and Transformers.
