Monday numbers Rth: Mad Max #1 with 5.3M, PP2 5.21M AoU 3.4M #AnUpsetForTheAges

Good hold for AOU.. 3.4M shows me this is evening out on weekdays..

It's actually been doing the 8-10% ahead of IM3 trend since day 4 of its run. Been very consistent on that trend as well. Can pretty much pencil in a 450-ish finish and call it a day at this point.

PP2 is going to have horrible legs. I've been saying on the PP2 thread that the film is geared toward it's target audience and anybody who hasn't seen it already isn't in their target audience. Second weekend will be okay and then it's going to fall off the map.

I looked up numbers for American Sniper hoping for a recent R-rated film with good WOM to compare with and saw DOM $349 million! Wow, did not know it grossed that much. Any other good R-rated films to compare with because $349 seems like a super reach for Mad Max.

That's kind of ridiculous.  This isn't a Twilight film.  It will not fall off the map.

So AOU is probably going to be the third or fourth, possibly the fifth highest grossing film of all time.

And you guys are disappointed in that?

Even TFIOS managed to stabilize after that second weekend drop.

And falling off the map is kind of ridiculous anyway.  I've never agreed with the concept that a film with a good multiplier is better than a film that opens massively and has a smaller one.  Would you rather have a Potter film that makes 375 mill after a 150 mill opening or a film that makes 200 mill off a 20 mill opening?  Money is money, doesn't matter how they get there.

Well even if AOU did over 1.5 billion or beat the TA, it would had been not seen as not great due to the lack of quality.

Exactly. The Potter films were all great IMO, just because they never had legs didn't mean they weren't well received.

That being said, Pitch Perfect 2 isn't the type of movie internet fanboys want to do well. All many of them care about is if the latest comic book or niche (well, I can't say Mad Max is a niche property anymore) action movie to do well.

GODZILLA's a great example. $200m would've been considered a pretty good result, back a few months before it opened. But after its OW, $200m was seen as shit.

Money's money. Doesn't matter how quick or slow it takes to get there.

I think the AOU is pretty shit.  But this isn't about the quality of it, this is about how much money it's making.  And the optics of it indicate that it is making a pile of money.  Top 5 of all time.

There's a line in a Danny Devito, Gene Hackman movie, where DeVito says pretty much the same thing......Money's money, that's why they call it money.   :)

I know I can look it up, but I'm too lazy to right now.

EDIT:  Movie is called Heist...and the line is :  Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money.

Not really.  It could still get past both films ahead of it to finish third.

But probably won't.
