Weekend Estimates: Ant-Man 58.04 | Minions 50.24 | Trainwreck 30.24 | IO 11.66 | JW 11.36 (Page 88)

The difference between the BO perfomances for Thor/CA and Ant-Man is that Thor/CA are much bigger players in MCU. Ant-Man can just be in assemble films without a direct sequel. Ant-Man will break even which is great but I don't know if it'll be enough to justify Ant-Man 2.

I liked Ant-Man, I'm more excited about his involvement in the future of the MCU than basically any other new character introduced in Phase 2 except for the Guardians.

But I don't need a 2nd Ant-Man movie anytime soon. I'd be happy enough to see him play a substantial role in Civil War or Infinity War.

That's much better than some characters I'd prefer to see killed off ASAP like Hawkeye, Falcon or Vision.

Why do you want the only black character right now in MCU to be killed off?

There're bluray version of movies all over the internet (10-20GB each movie).

My 2.5" HDD can hold about 150 movies.

Physical copies just take too much space.

We're not talking about bootlegs here, that's piracy, and it's illegal.

Cars 2 is a giant red flag

That's a Best Buy exclusve cover.  Oh and I have kids, so all Pixar and most big animated movies for the year are always purchased first day of release.

Brave too.

See above.

Battle LA is in that group, enough said

Don't judge me!  :(

I thought studios get much lower % of OS gross compared to domestic. Anyway, I guess it does make sense if you look at the big picture with increases for sequels, etc. On a side note, I'm on holiday in India and I couldn't find a single screen showing TG or AM here in Hyderabad. I asked a guy at the cinema when Ant Man is coming to IMAX and he says they'll stick to JW this weekend. Every cinema has Bhaijaan, Bahubali or Jurassic World and the JW shows are still selling out so a part of me is glad, but it sucks that I had to watch a pirated version of TG. I'll watch it again in IMAX along with Ant-Man once I'm back in Dubai.

Yeah, they get lower % then DOM but its still not as low as 25%. Barring a few exceptions (like China and even it gives atleast 30%), almost no market gives less than 35% to the studio. So one may take a 35-40% avg for OS and even that would be conservative.

Yeah. You won't find Ant Man in any theatre in the whole country. Coz its getting released here next weekend XD  As for TG, its already been more than two weeks since it got released and unless foreign movies are making good money, they don't remain in most theatres here for more than 3 weekends. Who would keep TG when you have blockbusters like Bahubali or Bhaaijaan incoming?

As if internet and comic fans represent a small crowd.

In the larger scheme of things...yes, they do. The producers are definitely trying their best to win the geek crowd over, but they alone do not propel a film to success. If they did, Pacific Rim would have made $200m+ off of the huge reception from SDCC.

Geeks take too much credit for the success of these films: "See? They did these films true to the comics, they listened to us, we showed up, they made a ton of money!" That could be why they felt slighted or betrayed by stuff like the twist in IM3, their patron saint Joss Whedon leaving Marvel, their golden boy Edgar Wright leaving/being pushed off of Ant-Man, etc. They don't have control over what happens in the MCU. They never had control, that's the illusion.

Same deal with Star Wars; Disney/Lucasfilm understand they need to win these people back, regain their trust, let them spread the good word early rather than discouraging people because they were previously burned by the prequels, but the GA will make or break it like everything else.

And I say this as someone who is relatively "geeky" (though I avoid the Internet geekosphere like the plague, because they spoil absolutely everything).

Well..... I have a collection of about 200 movies on Blu-Ray and it didn't cost me a single penny! :)

My uncle owns a store and he is kind enough to lend me blu-rays as soon as they arrive for a night. I rip it without any compression (normally takes 30-40GB) and store it in my Hard Disk. IMO managing 3 hard disks is a lot easier than 200 copies. Another benefit is that I can directly watch it on my PC or I copy the folder in my 64GB USB drive and plug it in the blu-ray player and see it on HDTV.

What are you? The luckiest guy on the planet??? I have never bought a single Blu-ray. I haven't even ever brought a DVD except for a few pirated ones... Btw....er... which city d'you live in? I live in Agra. Any chance we share the same city??

If JP4 made $5m Saturday, that is a 37% drop Sunday. Seems like a harsh projection by Universal, but maybe it was under $5m Saturday by a decent amount.

I guess we'll know soon when the daily breakdown comes out.

In any case, hopefully it goes up with actuals, but the percentage drop isn't harsh even if it sticks.

Yes it is harsh. This is late July, not May. I'm only talking about Sunday, not the weekend hold (which is great regardless).

Ant-Man is going to be profitable and it's sequel is going to make more money. The question is, do we need another Ant-Man movie even though we're going to see the character any way in CW and IW1 & 2? I'd rather have Marvel made sequels to more interesting characters (IM4 is a no for me too).

Yeah I rather have a Runaways movie over a Ant-Man 2. Theres alot of interesting characters they should do movies on before sequels to movies that just broke even.

Toxic WOM

Gosh! You guys keep wanting this movie to fail so bad!!

a 56% drop but still higher than DM2's 2nd weekend and total 10 day gross. Yes it might end up DOM less but it is not a flop nor does it have toxic, flopping word of mouth.

I was talking about the percentage drop for the weekend, not for Sunday, since we don't know what Saturday ended up being anyway.

I don't understand why people pour so much blood, sweat and text into talking about the Sunday projection part of an estimate. That's the day that hasn't happened yet. I don't care what models they use to extrapolate possible Sunday business, at the end of the day they are still blindly guessing. At least Friday/Saturday have flash info from theaters and early theater estimates from Rentrak to go off of (or am I mistaken?)
