The only really similar release in terms of genre, tone, and content I can think of that did really well at the box office would be Gone Girl. Though that had awards buzz and being based on a popular book working for it.

This is based on a book too. I dont know how popular it is tho. But the selling point is obviously Jlaw. Lets see if she sells in this type of adult role

Yeah forgot that one (ironically since both are Fincher), but also had the awards buzz and huge book sales working to its advantage.

One thing is certain, good WOM for this is an absolute must for the box office.

I mentioned it as a big deception/how hard of a sales it can be, Sony and the third party invester both lost a bit of money on it, it was bigger than Hunger Games/Fault in our star/Gone Girl/Girl on a train in book sales, it was one of the biggest book series of all time (the millennium apparently sold around 85m books):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_books

And yet it did 232m WW, with an 86% on RT, many oscar noms, a giant director/one of biggest writer in Hollywood/Trent Reznor score movie staring James Bond with an above 110m net budget and 100m marketing push.

Could be because the fan's had watched the Swedish movies on home videos too, a bit of a special case.

And I think this kind of hard R adult aimed thriller is just a tough sell, plain and simple. Gone Girl was an exception.

maybe that can give some clue:

10 book linked to a tv/movie adaption more popular:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/books/4497/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_books_1_4_last

There is 19 spy book more popular on amazon right now:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/books/9536072011/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_books_3_5_last

Not sure how it translate in popularity, but it is not Girls on a train/Gone Girl/Life of Pi or anything like that level.

It was not in the top 100 best sellers (Ny times or amazon) any year:

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/29970.2013_NY_Times_Best_Sellers_Fiction?page=1

It will play like an original movie I imagine with that level of popularity of the book.

Yeah studios should only make wide appeal Disney type films. Who needs R-rated films, right? :sparta:

ADVANCE SCREENING on Washington, D.C. - Feb 15
SPECIAL APPEARANCE BY THE CAST AND FILMMAKERS TO FOLLOW

https://redsparrowdcscreening.splashthat.com/

That is the same day that Jen is doing a "Times Talk" for the New York Times in DC, along with Francis Lawrence,  and former C.I.A. Chief of Disguise Jonna Hiestand Mendez.   Apparently, Mendez worked with the author of the book (and not on Jen's wigs for the picture, unfortunately...)

The books are literally written by a CIA spook? Now that makes sense, the synopsis reads like deranged Cold War era propaganda.

yeah while I'm not enthralled about anything so far about this movie, I am a sucker for spy films so there's a chance I'll see this in the theaters if I need something to watch :)

You may be right, but when you look at that first link you have to remember that most of those books are from TV/Movies that have already been released and are hits.  Some are Stephen King, some are Harry Potter, those were enormous hits, and have been out many years.  One could argue that the fact it's showing up with that elite company is a positive sign.

The brown wig looks pretty good, but the blond one not so much.

I think the brown wig and the blonde with the coat outside that some people people think looks Atomic Blondish both look like wigs. The ones that don't to me are the ones she wears when she isn't 'on assignment' (at least the context of when she wears them looks more natural in the trailers).  One is the first look you see in the clip below, where she has her finger to her lips and you see it a few other times.   I had decided you were subconsciously supposed to be thinking 'disguise' when she was working on a target. The ballerina brunette wig similarly looks natural to me.

Super Bowl

Quote

Turns out 20th Century Fox will be running a spot for their March 2 Jennifer Lawrence Russian spy pic Red Sparrow. The studio dropped a teaser for the trailer today which you can see below. Pic reteams Lawrence with her Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Mockingjay director Francis Lawrence with the pic based on the Jason Matthews’ novel.

seems like they're, like M:I and Skyscraper, dropping a trailer online alongside a spot. Maybe even red-band. don't think they'd be teasing it like this if it wasn't something more substantial than a 30/60 spot
