a big superhero movie doing around 500m in this day and age is really poor. Even more being a well known franchise.

The fact that a new character like Antman makes around the same money as X-Men: Apocalypse..... I just cant see how a studio would be happy with that.

But, clearly have a well-known team or characters is not the advantage some think it is. BvS had Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in one film. The numbers were quite strong, and if it it was better, it would have done more. Nevertheless, it lags Deadpool and GOTG at the domestic box office. Content, hook, and execution are all vitally important. The mood of the audience and cultural zeitgeist are as well.

Advertising was really poor here in the UK.

Maybe my perspective is skewed because I saw lots of bus/tube posters which is always running before big, blockbuster releases.

This was from Deadline, so BOM are wrong, they even have the Chinese gross at $95.9 when it reached over $98 million up to Sunday:

The latest in Fox’s X-Men franchise has mutated to a $341.5M overseas cume, coming off of a $24.4M weekend in 76 international markets.

But they weren't wrong, it's BOM that is wrong. Actually a few sites said it was $95.9 million including Screen Daily who then posted another article saying $98.11 million so BOM haven't updated their numbers yet.

I'm impressed with how steady XMA has been holding in China lately. Keeping this pace it should gross over $120m over there.

Exactly, and there are so many claims that Piracy hurts big budget hollywood movies in China back when Civil War's Pirated Movie appeared online... Guess what, the same is happening for XMA but it is doing fine, the holds are great =)
