Even so the Chinese box office market has grown by leaps and bounds since then. $200m in 2009-2010 was friggin insane. Probably equal to $500m or more today.

Yeah, back in 2009, the highest grossing film in China ever was 2012 at USD $68M, then comes Avatar just a few month later with a whooping 200M, not only breaking the highest grossing film record, but tripled it. So considering that Furious 7 made almost 400 Million just this year in China, I really don't know where a Avatar kind of run would land in China, must be a really crazy number.:)

Some cringeworthy shit on here the last few days. People need to accept that SW7 is not beating AVATAR worldwide, people need to stop putting down AVATAR'S run or inventing scenarios that make SW7 run more impressive that AVATAR's in some obscure way.

SW7 will probably take the domestic title, accept that and take it with humility.

Fuck Avatar. I'm glad it's going down

You underestimate the power of the exchange rate.  No way it finds another 750 million DOLLARS.  China is by far the largest expanding market, and it hasn't expanded that much.

Yup. And considering the Euro has lost 20% of its value compared to USD, as has the Sterling, the ruble has collapsed and the Yuan is down ~10% from 6 years ago...

That's a ton of USD to find in a global economy that's gotten its ass handed to it the last 6 months in the currency war.

Speaking of China, what was the record in 1997 when Titanic came out? It grossed $44m in its original run. The re-release set a new opening weekend record at $67m on its way to $145m in 2012, so clearly it was a beloved movie there. One wonders what it might have done with the current market as a brand new film.

Except that since F7, the Yuan has dropped from .1611 to .1543.

Just saying, USD rates do matter when talking about international box office.

Seriously only an American would think this. Star wars is massive, but if it fails to reach Avatars worldwide tally 6 years later with expanding markets on its side and being based on arguably the most iconic movie franchise in history, how can it be more impressive? Avatar was an original film, let's not put down its gross. Star wars is absolutely smashing it in some markets, avatar smashed it in practically every market, it's hard to get more impressive than that.

Also if you're 50 you're also saying it's more impressive than Titanic runs, which will end up with similar admissions sold in the US, and a shit load more overseas, makes no sense

Avatar was a gimmick. Brand new 3d format. SW7 will beat it WW w/o gimmick bump but yes OS may not happen. But then again what does Avatar do w/o the new gimmick. The sequel will prove that point.

Matching Titanic adjusted is a feat domestically when factoring Internet piracy and second market release which is half the time in titanic day plus home theater improvements.

ANH was groundbreaking with its special effects and something new and fantastical in a decade saturated with realism. It was pre-video.

SW7 has so many disadvantages compared to the 3 above mentioned and yet looking to meet or beat them. Tgats why its shaping up to be the biggest run of all time. Nothing will surpass it for years to come.

Damn right I sound american and God bless it. Where Tom Edison invented the light bulb, then 20 years later the motion picture then 30 years later, motion picture with sound.  No America, no Tom Edison and no avatar for you! Sitting in the dark, eating potatos and speaking german or russian:P
